Can't Change Pads...

  Breaking A 172 Replica
My brakes are grating as there is no pad left on the inside of the OSF wheel.

When I brake the sound absolutely awful and the disc is getting very rough.

I have bought the pads today and went to fit them but...

I cannot remove the caliper bolts. They just seem stuck on and exceptionally hard to get at?

I only have wheel braces to and spanners and none of them work. Any ideas?

If not how much would a garage charge to fit them?

Thanks

Sam

I just had a new set fitted and they only charged £30

That was for discs and pads on the front both sides

Where is the best place to take it to be done and how long will it take?

I will ask them if the discs are warped but it has only been like it for about 5 miles and I have been using my handbrake/gears to slow myself down.

i had this problem the other day,i just sprayed it with DW40 left it for a bout 20 mins went back and kept tapping it with the ratchet and hammer.it came of in the end..

WD40 (being careful not to get it on disks) and a breaker bar with plenty of leverage should do the trick

I can't give them anymore force.

I can only just get at it with the shock in place but this is not square on so the head rounds a bit and just slides off.

WIth the shock removed the caliper just spins around :S

The garages are all saying they are booked until after easter!

Might have to take it to kwik fit or something tomorrow.

Although at the moment I have to use my handbrake and the cable is stretching and it makes the back end go light and the tyres smoke!

I love cars.

lol...

I went to take the bolts out but they won't come out because I can't get to them properly.

So I removed the shock so I could get to them square on but the then the caliper moves around?

You have turned the wheel to full lock to help you havn't you?

Also jack the car up a bit more (so you get more leaverage as the bar car be used downwards and you work under the car, and just give it some more welly. Moll grips if you want to stop damaging the thread or if you do damge it thast is.

Ok I will give it another crack tomorrow.

The inside of the OSF disc is rough and is scoured with grooves about 2mm.

Will this need to be replaced?

Thanks

lol, you're making an easy job sound very difficult! I did my front pads a week or so ago, took me less than an hour all in. The front shocks do not have to be removed and even a spanner should undo the caliper bolts, they're not that awkward to get to.

  Breaking A 172 Replica
Ok thanks for the replies...

I find the bolts impossible to get to. A spanner just seems to slip right off and the wheel braces seem too big and clumsy and I don't want to round the head by twisting the bolt at the wrong angle!

I just tried to remove the hub to gain easier access to the bolts but of course then the caliper just rotates!

Grrrr.... I hate spending money like this when I only have about 8 weeks of driving the bloody thing left!

The spanners are those adjustable ones.

The Wheel braces are 17mm 19mm 21mm and 23mm.

19mm seems to be the size of the nut. This correct?

The big nut which holdes the caliper bracket to the hub is 17 or 18mm from memory.

The bolts which you need to be undoijg are the 13mm one on the caliper and holding the 17mm nut on the inside with a spanner.

Right ok.

I read a few posts on here saying you need to take the caliper off before you did anything?

19mm seems to fit snug but 17mm is too small.

Maybe it is 18mm which would explain the slipping but isn't this a weird measurement?

Edde if the disc has grooves around 1mm deep does it need replacing?

If I don't replace what will happen?

Its just I only have about 8 weeks of driving left?

caliper to hub is 18mm, 100% confirmed

you don't need to undo the 2 rear 18mm bolts just if you're changing pads

just undo the bottom 13mm bolt on the back of the lower caliper slider (use a 17mm to hold the other side)

Right ok, thanks for clarifying that Fred.

If one dics has grooves around 1mm deep over a 3cm band adjacent to the hub ( yet the discs have only covered 10000miles ) what will happen if I only change the pads?

Will it just lead to excessive pad wear?

Thanks

Sam
