car is revving itself at idle - upto 5500rpm?!

  clio 1.4 16v
hi there,

i have a problem with my clio 2001 1.4 16v "alize". i bought the car a month or two ago, and in the last few days it has been revving itself at idle.

when the car is warm, the idle speed will sometimes increase, by itself, usually to around 3500 rpm (but can be anywhere from 2000 to 5500 rpm). when driving the car as normal, its fine but when you stop and put the clutch in, it will occasionally start revving.

i know nothing about clios, but as the throttle body cant open itself and im sure that it isnt getting stuck open (as the speed increases not decreases), im guessing its some sort of warm up valve that lets air in when cold? i would guess either hte valve is gone or the temperature sender/something like that.

according to the previous owner, the car also needs a new carbon canister, not sure whether this has anything to do with it.

not sure whether this is a common problem or anyone else has had this, but any advice would be much appreciated!

cheers

scott

MAP sensor or the throttle body is dirty
Does the temp gauge move up and down as well? If so temperatrue gauge.

Other than that sounds like you'v got a intake leak need to check the ehole engine see if you've got a gap forming somwhere in the intake manifold which means the engine has to rev up to ensure you don't have a lean burn.
