car shopping in europe

  850 T5. mmmm Turbo!

hey hey,

usless info alert.

i was always under the impression cars were cheaper in europe, so i did some shopping around using the renault website configurator.

i got the standard prices for the same car the renault sport 182 in 6 countries..... with interesting results.

Holland e27,200 = £18,718

France e22,050 = £15,175

Spain e22,000 = £15,000 ish

Norway (dont ask) Kr 341,500 = £28,558

Germany e22,500 = £15,200 ish

UK £14,700 = e21,361

so either the the value of the pound just fell through the floor or its cheeper to buy renaults in this country. ????????

surly not??

Surely those charges include taxes applicable to that country only which we wouldnt have to pay??

Remember that VAT is just one example of tax. Some countries add other taxes to products in addition to VAT. Just look at the price difference between France and Holland. Same currency so why the large difference in price.... Must be tax related.

so you still think it may be cheeper to buy abroad??

for some reason i was under the impression we were the only country that got a raping by the tax man.

Jeez no mate. Just try buying a pint in some countries, its something like £7 a pint in some Scandinavian countries due to tax alone.

Let me explain an example for belgium where I live.

A standard 182 costs 20850 € = about 14000 £ (including 21% VAT)

ROad tax a year for this car is 319 € = about 215 £

When you get your number plate for this car you need to pay 2478 € !!! = about 1700 £ !!!

In belgium this one time number plate tax is according to the BHP. Thats why in Belgium the clio sport isnt popular at all. Nobody wants to pay such an amount. For the V6 its double the amount => about 3400 £ which is the max you need to pay. I think the barrier lies at 170 bhp (thats why of the MK1 there was a 168 bhp version in belgium) and at 218 bhp (1700 £ => 3400 £) madness isnt it? you get punished in belgium when you want to drive a powerful car.
