Cat bypass vs sports cat?

For Mk2 172 with group N ECU, OEM exhaust, ITG filter...

Read somewhere that filter and decat/sports cat was the best mod to complement the group N ECU. I got massive gains from a full decat on a Scooby a few years back. Totally different kettle of fish with the 172 obviously, but the catalyst is a real limiter...

Not interested in putting the cat back on once a year so decat probably not for me. Sports cat is about £120 more (Janspeed) - but I'd only bother if there were gains to be had. Any ideas?

i would also like to know the answer to this. thinking of spending 600 on exhaust, so is it worth it in performance increase? o

The cat on the 172 is quite restrictive the 182 one is much better for flow. Personally I'd definatly change the cat even before the exhaust. You'd need the ecu To be remapped to get the best from those mods the group N one won't be perfect to your cars engine.
Don't expect 20hp or so 5hp maybe with a remap but it will sounds slightly lounder (although depends what exhaust you have) have the manaifold modified at the same time as a remap and a decat would be beneficial.

Ive got a Janspeed de-cat and you really could feel the difference in performance !!

Well worth it imo.

MOT time is the only thing that might put folk off with either having to find somewhere who'll sneak it through or having to put the orig cat back on.

Thanks all. Just to reiterate the question - can't be bothered with the hassle of a decat, so is the sports cat worth doing?

sport's cat's are much more expensive than decat pipe's.. and you'll get better throttle response from having the decat... but you have to swap over the decat pipe every year. Not too much work if you get it done properly in the 1st place.. its just a case of undoing 4 bolts.
Decat's the better option IMO

they are a proper ballache to do though, its a two man job as you can't get at either side of the downpipe from the top, or underneath, (no room at all) you can't hold the nut or bolt when tightening them up.....

its about a 15 min job for two
