Catcam 438 Timing

I have a set of 438 cams to be fitted in my 172 engine along with a set of ITB's, can anyone advise if factory timing is suitable for this set up and if not what should be used as an alternative?

Thanks

You will want to time them non standard for the best gains. To the 421 positioning.

Factory timing will be more than suitable and will still work well, just not as good as it could with custom timing.

How to do the timing is another question. If you've got someone local with the same setup and custom timing, it can be 'copied' across with a modified timing tool. If not then you'll need to get someone who knows how to custom time them.

My 438 cams are on 421 timing marks, with ITBS. Alex white recently put the exact same timing from mine onto another friends same spec engine.

Im up in Newcastle and there is no body local or any specialists who can help with this locally. It is going to go for mapping at EFI once its all finished but dont think timing is something they would adjust.... if standard will work well enough i might just have to go with that.

Would be worth ringing EFI and asking them. He's mapped a lot of Clios in the past so may even know how to do the timing.

If not then keep the standard timing, it'll still work well with a custom map at EFI

Get @bloke to time them on your way to EFI?

i have sent EFI an email, would be good to see if theres a solution to this. theres a couple lads running the 438s on standard timing around here so sure they wouldnt mind getting them timed properly too

where is this man! plan was to fit cams belt and bodies while the engine was out then take it for mapping....alternative might be to get them fitted, sort a base map and have them timed before mapping?

Sorry, couldn't resist...

easy enough to time them up. chris may do it for you but he avoids most things spanner related. i'm half hour from efi and you may well find chris puts you onto me anyway if he doesn't know anyone your way to do it. got a guy down from scotland next week to fit sm inlet before it goes to chris for mapping.

I will see what his email says mate but seems like the best bet would be to get the car to you first off for the timing. How would you want the car? Ie cams fitted and timed to factory and you adjust or would you want to do belts and timing together? Whatever would work for you really. Then get the car to Chris from there

am easy over it, you driving it down or bringing it on trailer for mapping?

Any chance you could let me know what sort of figures the car does once mapped mate?

@benji93 Same applies here, be interested to see what it makes with the piper cams

i doubt ac delete would make a noticeable difference? when it's off it's only the belt running an idler pulley essentially so even if you did a back to back by removing it as quick as you can i doubt you could prove any difference to be fair.

does save weight though getting rid of it all.

The car will be running the AT power ITBs, CatCam 438s (properly timed by the looks of it) 182 manifold, Air-con delete and original PAS. seeing 200 would be nice.
