Crap in the fluid puts more wear on the PAS components, hence being a good idea to change periodically. Just like the gearbox oil. Not sure what Haynes states for renewal as its not as often as other fluids but still a good reason to check and do such a procedure if you feel its required.

My car is 10 years old now, on 115k and I am gonna be doing mine and adding Forte PAS treatment (few on ebay cheap at the mo) to help. Also doing brake fluid which is overdue and will get coolant changed when new engine is fitted.

I agree but I don't think any 172 will realy need it I agree a 10 or so year old car with 100k is different than a 5year old or so 172 at worse.
