Cleaning and protecting suspension

Last new thread from me tonight I promise.

I am going to be stripping down and cleaning various bits of my project car over the weekend and thinking while I am at it, might be worth doing something with the suspension. Is there anything I should use to clean it with, and is there anything I can then put on it to protect it? Was thinking of using something like Autoglym engine cleaner to clean it with and then just a dry oil to protect? Can i paint the body of the shocks with hammerite or not? Would that be overkill? They are old shocks but in good order as far as I can tell.

I wouldn't use grease on suspension as it slowly rots the rubber parts. On older cars I have always sprayed Waxoyl or other cavity wax on all the suspension and chassis parts. It doesn't rot anything but it does keep everything moist ( I like moist) stops rusting and seized nuts & bolts , an added bonus is that old dry suspension parts tend to creak & squeak when dry, Waxoyl eliminates all this. You can brush it on or spray, your choice but make sure the Waxoyl is nice and warm so it is thin and then it flows into gaps and cavities or you can dilute it with white spirit.
