Anyone else get tappet like noise around 2.2k Rpm ? (thats when it is worst). Around town with walls / hedges etc to bounce the sound back. It just seems a little too much for 7k miles on the clock ! Windows shut and you barely hear a thing. If you rev it at 2.2k Rpm at a stand still wth the windows open you can hear it clearly, it is still there above those revs but that is when it is worst. Any ideas ?

YES!! Mine does that too. it seems to clear after 2.5k rpm. I have no idea if it is normal, but it sounding like a mega mile Golf wasnt one of my reasons for wanting a new 172.

It does quiet down as you say. Glad to know that mine is not the only one that does it. How many miles has yours done ?

12,900 i think. I dont remember the noise last summer, but then it was still quite new. so long as it doesnt get much worse, Im not unduly fussed. BTW - I chose to have an oil change at 6k, plus obviously the oil was changed at the 12k service, so Ive been looking after it nicely and its never driven hard when cold, plus its always allowed to cool for 30 secs or so after a long run before i turn it off.

I had my 1st oil change at 3k miles and also never thrash it when cold and let it idle for circa 20 seconds before swithing off. Maybe we treat our cars to kind and should just rag it all the time and treat it like sh*te. No one else seems to have reported this problem.

I think I will mention it at its 12k service unless it is in before that for anything else and see what they say. Sounds like hydraulic cam followers to me, as the performance hasnt dropped off I would assume it is not a cracked ring.

I want to fit a Ktec pipe, but want them to know about this before I do.
