Clio 173 Cup running on 3?

  Megane275R / 172 mk2
My Clio has developed a fault. Driving it the other day it suddenly lost some power, eml is on and it feels like it’s running on three cylinders. I’ve fitted new ht leads and coil pack and it’s still not right. Am going to do plugs too just in case but any other ideas? Can’t be something sinister surely, valve or injector? Would that randomly break like that?

Also if anyone can confirm the precise order the ht leads should be connected that would be good I.e. which cylinder to which corresponding number on the coil pack that would be good. Thanks.

Almost certainly an injector. Easy to diagnose by unplugging each one at a time while engine is running.

OK thanks dude. So by unplugging each one whilst engine Is running how will I be able to tell?

Are they expensive to buy?

With the engine idling (and obviously misfiring) unplug each one in turn. If you unplug a good one the engine will misfire even worse. When you unplug the dead one the engine won’t change.

Don’t be tempted to buy cheap ones off eBay. Genuine ones are about £40 each I think.

If you can stretch to it, replace them all. If one has failed now there’s a good chance you may get another one fail soon too.

Whilst running unplug one and plug back in and then unplug the next one, change in engine means its not the one, if the engine doesnt change thats the one.

Ok thanks fellas. I’ll guve that a try. I did a similar thing with the HT leads as initially I thought it may be those at fault. Annoyingly I’ve already needlessly spent £60 trying to find the fault but hey ho. Will keep you updated with how I get on. Can you buy genuine ones anywhere other than renault?

I had exactly the same fault on my 182 last month.
Running on three cylinders with the EML on.
I fitted new genuine HT leads and new plugs.
No difference.
Injector 3 had failed. I replaced all four (an easy job, took me 20 minutes) and not only is the car now OK but it runs better than it did before. (The idle was a bit lumpy when cold)

Renparts sell four genuine injectors for £135. After you fix the fault the EML will eventually go out. It takes about a dozen “good” engine starts, at least it did on mine.

Injectors reduced from £68 to £44 on EuroCarParts at the moment. Just ordered one myself.

Sales55 is the code.

In the unlikely event that the new injectors don’t cure the fault, at least you will know what it isn’t.

Can anyone tell me which order the cylinders are numbered.

Eg 1 to 4 left to right or right to left.

Op did you do a fault code reading on the eml light. Our 182 eml light keeps coming on and it says misfire on cylinder 3 but the engine appears to run smoothly without a misfire. Just wondering if it’s the injector too.

No 1 is at the gearbox end.

Renparts are new for sure.

If you want 4, this the best price I have seen.

Oh ok that's good to know. A few things put me off buying them. One is I've bought items from them before and found their service very poor. Secondly their logo says 'Recycled Renault Parts Specialist' and thirdly the photo of the injector itself looked like it had rust on it! It's probably just a bad photo though, but it was a deal breaker for me.

Just call Renparts! I have no connection at all with them, but have had four new injectors from them and they were brand new Magneti Marelli in sealed bags with the clips included.

Price was under £140 including postage.

I should be on commission with them!

They sound fine. I no longer need any injectors but I would consider them or ECP in the future.

With previous orders I got fed up of chasing them though

The only time I have heard of any problems with Renparts was when they bought some stock from ECP.

I think it was @Landyman ended up with an odd PSA injector.

The 4 I had came brand new in sealed packets, as he said.

I’ve had issues with them before when buying used parts as they made false promises and needed a lot of chasing. Eventually the parts arrived though. It put me off using them again but glad to hear they didn’t let down customers with the injectors.

They’re a tenner less than ECP even with the substantial discount that ECP take off their admittedly overinflated prices.

It wasn’t me, but l remember the thread a couple of months ago.
I did have a gearbox from Renparts and it took ages to come, first they said the courier had lost it, then they said it had been delivered to the wrong place.
However when it eventually arrived it was perfect....and they did say they’d refund the postage charge as compensation for the delay (still not had the refund though and it was last year)

My Cup lost injector 4 today. Lost power on the m5 30 miles from home luckily managed to limp it home. had a spare set of injectors in the garage so it's all sorted now thankfully.

  dan's cast offs.
I get injectors from euro, they can do a good price if you can haggle them down as well.

Ok update on this I’ve been a bit busy. Tried the injector test and didn’t really notice any discernible difference in that unplugging them it really changed the engine note. It could be an intermittent one of course but not sure. Fitted new spark plugs today and still no joy. Seemed marginally better for a while but then went back to normal and the ecu light was flashing. It’s normally just on but was flashing before too. Perhaps need to get the code read. Wondering now if it’s a lambada sensor ? Would this make it run like s**t though? It drives but it’s reslly down on power and sounds a bit like a lawnmower. Annoying! Not sure where to go next just been chucking money at it which is highly frustrating.

Ok thanks. I didn’t try and unplug them as advised above and it’s noteably made it worse hence why I thought this may not be the issue. I will buy four anyway I’ve already spend a hundred or so quid on the f*cker so what’s another hundred Lol!?

Even my cheap code reader helped narrow down a recent stutter to a specific cylinder / injector.
If you haven't got access to one, its £15 well spent.

Ok...another update for y’all;

You are going to say i told you so haha...anyway, bit the bullet and bought four new injectors from Renparts on Thursday, paid for next day delivery as I was off Friday. They arrived in time and were all new I can confirm. Fitted them in about an hour and thank god she is back to normal!! EML light is still on, will it’s go off in time or will I need to disconnect battery for a while?

On a sidenote it’s a pig pulling out the old injectors from the head and pressing the new ones into fuel rail. I removed whole rail put it on a bench and pushed in the new ones. Push and slight twist does the trick. Then fitted the whole rail and injectors back in. Again you need to loosely be bolt it and push and twist the new ones in to ensure they’re not seated properly in the head. They only twist every so slightly so be careful (if the little metal retaining clips are in place).

Thanks for the advice lads. ??

  dan's cast offs.
Bit of rubber grease sorts them out. The eml is possibly on with a lambda code as chances are it's just thrown a wobbler when you've had the bad injector.

  Megane275R / 172 mk2
THanks fellas. I did use the tiniest amount of copper slip on the o ring on the fuel rail end but literally a tiny bit to liber the surface of it.

So will I need to get the EML light switches off with a device or what?

  dan's cast offs.
could be but won't know until it's plugged in though. will clear if it is just injector fault after few cold starts.
