Clio II 1.2 D4F-722 (2005) - Engine noise - Mechanics given up.

  Clio II
Hi all!

So to make a long story short. My engine makes a strange noise - so strange that three mechanics decided to walk away and not even look at it. Which bums me out - because I like that car and they wouldnt even tell me why it´s messed up - probably because they don´t know.

Hopefully I can get some help from some gearheads as I am more wellversed in the electronics department.

The issue

A noise that comes and goes rhytmycally (on idle). When revving it increses in pitch and speed but after 2000 revs it dissapears and you can hardly hear it.

Here is the link to the audio. High volume warning!
audio.com - a better way to upload and share audio online

Other symptoms

When the oil gets hot, the noise dissapears slowly (becomes way less noisy) but the "STOP - Check oil" light comes up. Especially when revvving past 2000rpm when hot/driving.

The noise comes from the top left side of the engine (passenger side), but I don't know if its a bearing/pulley or something in the engine as the noise "vibrates" quite much when the noise is heard (almost like a wave) throughout the block.

Other things that are good to know

  • Im not loosing any coolant.
  • Has oil and service done to it - Including changeing timingbelt/pump a few years ago. The issue popped up just recently.
  • The oil is brown with smell of gasoline (but this is a cold engine city car so I deem it as normal).
  • The sensor is drenched in oil after a mishap when changing the oil last time, so I guess the sensor could be an issue - but wouldnt explain why it only alerts on revving it (and hot).
  • Its not the dephaser as the 1.2 does not have one.
  • No other codes, lights or alerts.
Tests I could do?
  • Compression test?
  • Oil pressure test?
  • Change oil/filter?
  • Change sensor?
  • Remove sump and check oilpump?
  • Worth it?

The question

Based on this info could anyone give me some insights? What could it be, worth fixing it or just give up and go home?

Thanks for your time!

/M

  Whichever has fuel
Take the aux belt off and run it. (Not for long though)
Of the noise stops it’s either a duff pulley or an alternator bearing.

Does it have air con?

It’s really hard to hear faults on a recording so it’s difficult to say.

I will try that (auxbelt) and yes it has an aircon (that works).
