Clio shows it’s stuff

  2005 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

Ive just gotten home from a very good day.

Basically as some of you know Ive joined the VW Club of SA (http://www.vwclub.co.zawww.vwclub.co.za) because there arent any local renault clubs.

Anyway, today was the VW Club Annual Jamboree which consists of a Gymkhana to determine the best driver in the club. Since I drive a Renault Im forced to compete in the Open class against any other members who dont drive VWs.

The final result is that I took 2nd place in my class behind a very modded Lotus 7 by only 3 seconds, 3rd place was 13 seconds slower than me, so Im very impressed with both myself and the Clio.

Needless to say Im in the final which will be taking place next sunday where all the drivers get one chance at a course laid out on a skidpan in the wet in a std 1.3 mk1 golf...wish me luck.

Oh in terms of performance, the types of VWs which were closest to me in time was a Polo 2.0 16v turbo which is producing 250bhp at the wheels where Im only making 114bhp at the wheels. btw he was only 1 second quicker than me.

On a sadder note I was just to late in being taken round the track in a Clio V6 by a professional racing driver...damn officials closed the track.

Not considering my location...4500ft above sea-level which robs a whopping 17% of my power (turbos only lose about 3-5%)

And Im forced to run 93RON which robs me of a whopping 9bhp

114 + 9 = 123 + 17% = 148bhp @ the wheels

Or if you prefer 114 + 17% = 137 + 9 = 146bhp @ the wheels.

Either way you look at it, at high altitude N/A engines are robbed of a lot of their power and poor quality fuel only adds to that problem.

Im shortly going to be decatting, changing the spark plugs so I am able to run 102.6RON Leaded Racing fuel, then Ill install the new chip I picked up today, and will also be installing a replacement foam filter

So do I, but there are going to be a few VW challenge drivers in the final too which will make it very tough.

Danie...why not pop round on Sunday to Zwartkops for the skidpan day..
