Clunk when pulling off :(

  172 Cup
Hi all,

Everytime I pull off in 1st at normal revs etc, there is a clunk then the car goes.

Bit worried TBH, I am no mechanical wizard, but I am guessing maybe the driveshafts or diff?

Am I on the scent and has any body experienced similar on their 172?

Many thanks

Matt

  Better than yours. C*nt.
Is it every time you pull off? And I'd check engine mounts - especially is it the dogbone mount that breaks? One of the sexperts will be in shortly to tell you I'm talking s**t.

I have the same problem buddy.
I will ask fred when i go to pick my car up see what he thinks it is.

This happens to mine when i first set off/turn the steering wheel - only does it once then it's fine, I think it's a topmount rubber bush or something.. If It is what i thnk it is, then from what i've read else where its a common fault and nothing major to worry about. (it's a different kind of clunk to sticking brakes btw)

i'd be looking at dog bone mount or top mounts. Mine does it but all my engine mounts are new but the top mounts on the suspension look fooked.

Check the top gearbox mount is done up securely.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I will take the callipers apart and get a bit of copper grease on the go, because this weather definately can't have done them any good.

Also I think I will invest in a K tec dogbone mount, would this be an easy DIY job?

I will give you all an update after next weekend, but this clunk happens all the time.

On another note...... I HATE LIMP MODE!!!!!

Drive shafts are expensive i paid £250 for the pair. the top gear box mount is under the battery i think its 17mm bolts there should be four. Top mounts are a common problem and so are dogbone mounts so try these first as they are cheapest.

What mileage is the car? i can't imagine it being shafts unless its getting on for 100k miles. A full set of engine mounts will set you back £250.

I've done all new engine mounts and new shafts and it still does it so i'd try top mounts first.

It's done about 63k. Don't fancy these £250 bills much at all :(

I'm debating getting rid now, too much stress!

With the Mk1 if this is loose you'll start having the car jump out of gear in corners as well.

But yea, I'd go for engine mounts or struts.

Does your gearstick wobble about under acceleration much? That would indicate worn mounts. The dogbone is PISS EASY to change, you just need to get under the car, they are cheap. Always worth changing if in doubt anyway. have a look at pictures under cars like yours and pinpoint the dogbone mount, or invest in a Haynes manual :)

No need to panic yet :D

I was told my clunking was top suspension mounts. I decided to go for solid AST jobbies @ £140.

They've not arrived yet, but fingers crossed it's them! If it's LBJs at least they're cheap and straightforward to fit...
