Competeing in Sprints.

Morning all, had a quick search on here and couldnt find anything conclusive. Would like to know whats required to do sprints etc, I know theres quite a few people on here that do it (shiftspark/sprintcup etc). Would just like to know how the class's work and rough costings for each day is etc. Hopefully if there's enough info in here it could maybe be 'sticky'd' so people have a easier way to look into the sport.

Cheers
Nick

Good request for info Nick. Mike and I were thinking about sprinting too as we imagine the costs are substantially lower than racing. Tymberland (Andrew) is another member with knowledge as he used to sprint. I know mine and Mikes car would have to be entered in quite a high class due to the number of upgraded parts etc. Still, would be great fun even if not competitive! Will check back for updates.

Ah shall Andy a shout also then, show him to this thread to hopefully shed some light on it all. Would be good if its not too much work to use to the Trophy for a couple of sprints within the year in between racing in the Tintops with the racecar.

Hello Nick,

I'll put this link up but you'll need to attach it to this thread, it's really easy to get started.

To compete in the road standard class, which is what I did 5 seasons of all you need to do to your car is:
Fit a timing strut to the front of the car to the dimensions and height specified by the blue book which you will get when you apply for your licence.
Put some yellow tape around the negative lead of your battery.
Put a sticker next to the ignition key indicating which way is OFF.
As a competitor you will need some fire proof overalls and an approved helmet. The first time you use the helmet you will need to pay £2 to the scrutineers for a MSA sticker to show the helmet is eligible.
Then off you go!
The beauty of SB is that the mods you can make are very limited. With Nottingham Sports Car Club the following applies to SB:
Everything standard and as it left the factory except:
Dampers may be replaced by performance items.
Tyres may be changed, but must come from list 1A of the blue book.
Both front seats may be replaced by fully trimmed competition items.
A harness may be fitted.
A rollcage may be fitted.
Simples.
The next class up is 1B (Road modified) which opens up modification of the car, however, all interior trim must remain as fitted to the car originally and all ancillaries must still operate i.e. rear wiper, electric windows etc. Tyres remain as list 1A which is also a limiting factor. In 1B, you will find some very highly modified Peugeot 205's amongst others and diffs, ITB, and coilovers are the minimum requirements really.
Your final class option is Modified Production Car which as Cr33do has mentioned, is where they would be. This class is for race cars, i.e. stripped interiors, plexi windows, fibreglass panels, 1B tyres etc etc.

As I found while competing, different clubs operate different class structures. Some don't have SB (Road Standard) so you get lumped in with the modified boys! So some events will be competitive and others not so. This said, you are racing against the clock for championship points, so an outright win isnt necessary, as long as your time for the event scores you enough points.

Scoring points at an event.

Each event has a target time allocated to it. Usually the class record, but if it is a new event to the club, a target time will be calculated.

My class record for MIRA is 57.20, which is the current target time there. If you match this time, you would score 20 points. For every 10th of a second slower, you deduct .10 of a point. So, if you finished with a time of 59.70 secs you would score 17.5 points for the event. if you beat the class record or target time, you score more points in the same way.

If you can consistently beat the target time, you are well on your way to a championship win!

Hope this helps.

Haha, thats Russel Thorpe! Remember beating him at Three Sisters in my Cup. He came over to me and my brother who also ran a Cup and asked who had prepared the cars for us and were they Touring Cars or something. The look on his face when we told him they were standard.
He got his revenge at Aintree though, and beat us by a second!

Cracking info Andrew. Remember most of it from our chat at Oulton:)

Well, we already have the yellow tag around the battery earth so AY52 is nearly ready to hit the track again! I will see what dates they are running at Curborough next year and will try and enter an event.

Andy (Tymberland) - Cheers for the info, thats perfect! So in the standard class (SB), even small things like panel filters and standard cat-back exhaust are forbidden? Also will things such like a Whiteline rear anti-roll bar push you into the 'road modified' class or would they not pick it up?

Lol Russ on here (sprintcup) refered me to that youtube link, so thought I'd put it up. Only for you to come in and give a better description on whats needed! :)

Hello Nick,

Yes I type about as quick as I drive that would take me all day lol, you'll find some questionble cars at all events, some are but some have quick drivers in them, I changed my car into 1b as sonn as the BTB exhaust went on, others will wait untill they get questioned, I'd just say enter a few events and enjoy it.

Tymberland are you Richards W brother who ran the 172 Cup?

Regards Russ........

Would love to see you running at Curborough. When I rolled my first Cup there, I still won the class by over a second! My P.B. is 37.32, just so you've got something to aim for. Very technical track when you are looking for that last half a second.

You also need approved gloves, club membership and Nat B licence, as Russ says there are plenty of questionable cars in every class.
Standard is probably the best cost wise but you need to run a standard exhaust which I think is strange considering most fit stainless replacements but you can fit uprated dampers !? I will try and do a write up later on.
