Computer wont shut off

  ITB BG 182
I have a HP 4045ea dv7 laptop.
When i put it to hibernate, it semi shuts down but never actually goes off, I have left it running for around an hour an still its not fully turned off.

Also when ive been using Nero for burning a CD, i'll put the auto shutdown on. hey presto, come back to it an hour later and the count down timer is stuck on 1 second.

What ever i do, it just seems like it does not want to fully turn off or shut down.

Anyone got an idea what it could be?

Onlyway i get it to shut off is power out job.

If it's not that old I'd contact HP

I would hardly even buy paper in PC Wolrd! :slap:

Hibernate + windows usually seems to lead to failure to hibernate.

Don't know why it's still an option.

Can you change it to 'sleep' when the lid shuts instead ?

Sym0n, im laughing so hard..... Its a different laptop you pillock, this one I did not get from PCW.

TheEvilGiraffe - Ive set it to sleep then to shut down when the lid closes and it does not turn off.
Recently restored it back to factory settings and still nothing, one of the IT gals at work refreshed some thing to do with the setting in BIOS? But still nothing, i have to wait for the battery power to die or pull the mains cable with battery out.

Until the day I'm pushing up daisies - I will never understand the need for Hibernation on a PC. To me, the PC is on or it's not. If achievable, would people leave their cars overnight idling at 100rpm, just so they can start in the morning, that bit quicker?

It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist in the first place - therefore rendering the solution itself, completely pointless. And I won't even begin to go into the issues with remote connection to bloody devices that have been put into Hibernation.

OP - it sounds like some program or service is preventing Windows shutting down properly. What AV are you using?

I blame windows, could it possibly be the sensor in the lid not recognising it is closed?

Pillock just isn't used enough in modern day. I'm going to start a campaign to bring it back along with cowabunga.

Have you tried switching it off and then back on again?

LOL @ pillock. I haven't heard that for ages. Well played John. Well played.

I only used to hibernate when im leaving for an hour or so, usually around break time.
AV wise is Kapersky.

The sensor does recognise its closed as it starts to shut down, makes the noise for shutting down, but the main power light does not go off. It has a HP logo light that usually goes off when its in sleep or hibernate.

I cant switch it off, this is the problem. Shutdown, Sleep, Hibernate and even log off, none of them will turn the computer off.
I have to wait for the battery to die or pull the battery and mains out.

Surely sleep does the job if you're away for an hour ?

As above, hibernate is a pointless feature IMO too. Sleep with the lid closed, off with the power button. Why would you need anything else ?

It makes the tone/music for it turning off. But its still running. Power button for 5 seconds also turns it off but thats just like pulling the main cord/battery out.

Run a virus scanner from a different company, if that fails you may have to re-install windows

Yea, pressing the power button for 5 seconds works some times, but it stuff up the pc by not shutting down properly.

Virus check done - nothing found
Virus check in safe mode done - nothing found
Virus check with eset and bitdefender in safe mode - nothing found.

Its been restored back to a point i saved 6 months ago still not shut down the proper way.
I've restore it back to factory settings, then formatted through ms-dos and re-installed that way.

Even though I can get it to re-start, ive turned the power off when the screen goes black but as soon as i turn it back on again, i get the message that the system was not turned off correctly and that i must go through safe mode.

Which ever way i try, i can not get this pc to shut down via the correct proceedures. Start>shutdown or start>hibernate/sleep.

or am i stuck with re-start>pull the plug?

windows erro or hardware fault its seems like. all i can say is, back up everything you want off that pc, and reformat, fresh install of windows. hopefully.... it should work.

imo thats why i dont like laptops, to much hassle to fix, were as a tower/desk top pc can be resurected far simpler

well i cant be arsed with it now or well i dont know what else to do.

Gave it to a mate who used to work for compaq/hp as a techy.
