Confused

I found a really old Autocar magazine last night and when looking in their old pink pages i noticed they had the 1.8RSI, but the valver was a 1.7? They also had the valvers 0-60 as better than the williams! Is this all true?

Well they have more power/torque dont they..and i thought they weighed less. The williams has a slightly better top end according to this mag though.

Rob - its Autocar. The magazine that appraised the driver appeal of the new Jag from...the passenger seat. I wouldnt dwell on their figures too much.

they are quicker but they have shorter gears 1-4. Valvers can stay in 2nd to 60 and willies have to change to 3rd.

For a spot on 0-60 u want a 2.0 with a valver gearbox

As I understood it the williams has the same ratios 1-4 but a lower rev limit than the valver. It has a longer 5th as otherwise the low rev limit would give it a lower top speed. The 0-60 time was done in the wet by autocar but isnt any better than the valver cause of the extra gear change Adams 16v mentioned. In a straight line the low done torque doesnt help but its when you get caught low in the rev range on your favourite b road that it gets an advantage. The extra torque is all very nice but you are really paying twice as much on the car and insurance for 19 16v front wishbones and a dialled damper and spring rate set up!

valver has shorter ratios, but higher rev limit as mentioned before. the cars weigh the same, and the fact that the valver will get to 60 in second makes it quick on paper (theres little difference in 0-60 times) but the extra mid range pull in the williams makes it much faster in real terms

Valver is qucker by 0.2/0.3s to 60 due to the 3rd gear change at 55mph in the willy.

Standard valver should do 61/62mph in 2nd gear and should take between 7.3-7.7 to get there.

1.8 RSI was 1.8 8v (110bhp).
The valver is a 1.8 16v (137bhp)
the williams is a 2.0 16v (150bhp).
They never made a 1.7.

probs cos its 1764 cc?? am i right with that figure
1.8 8v is 1794 (RSI and RT - which incidently is 95bhp)

1.8 16v is 1764

2.0 16v is 1998

and yes that is right, 8v is a higher cc.

I know your not a fan of Autocar and was expecting the intial reply! ;)

But it seems they were right...apart from the engine size of the valver.
