could be doin with some help with homecinema..

new to home cinema and just moved into my 1st flat so got this semi budget setup (please refrain from the slagging of bose please, ta)

TV: Samsung LE32R74BDX

DVD: Samsung HD850

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V100 D

Speakers: Bose Acoustimass 10

ive also got my pioneer cdj's connected to the receiver as well as my pc

ive got it connected as follows, tv to dvd is HDMI, dvd to receiver for audio is optical and then just the speakers connected as normal.

is this the correct way to connect all this? should i be connecting my tv to the receiver via component for anything? whats the benefits bar eliminating the tv remote

also, im not really sure what mode to have the receiver on for movies, i want it on a setting where if planes or helicopters fly by etc, it goes from speaker to speaker and sounds like its flying round the room, same for sword fights, horses running etc ie lord of the rings, i cant really get it sounding like that on any of the settings

sorry if it all sounds a bit vague, but im not really clued up on it yet

nothing wrong with bose fella quality stuff expensive too. your wiring is correct so don't touch that. to get surround sound you need to set your amp to dolby prologic for tv and when watching films dolby digital ( better surround sound as its 5.1/6.1 ). don't want to sound like a nerd but if you could post a pic of your yamaha amp and remote for it i could have a look and tell you which buttons to push.

ill get pics up in 5 mins chum, ive no phonos from tv to amp as i just watch normal tv thru the built in speakers..

just had a look at the specs for the amp, good choice:D right i don't want to confuse you but your amp also has dsp modes and these make the sound coming from your speakers loads better, all the little effect stick right out. you will have a button on the remote which should say dolby digital/ dts ( dts is a better sound due to being less compressed ) so make sure you push this when you are watching dvds. you then select a dsp mode ie action/adventure/sci-fi ( try them out as they all sound very different ) again there should be another set of buttons for dsp modes which i'll point out on the remote. you should connect a set of phono aswell so you can get pro logic for the tv, does'nt sound as good but you might aswell use it if you've got it plus it will sound loads better than the tv speakers. on another note my sound silly but are all the correct speakers on there terminals? how many speakers you got as your amp can do 6.1... sorry to go on:D

dont worry about going on, i need all the help i can get lol

ive got 5 double satellite cubes, 3 at the front, left, right and centre and 2 at the rear, left and right

theyre defo all connected to the correct terminals, all the speakers wires are marked thankfully, im waiting till my g/f's friends disappear, ive been relegated to the hall stuck on dial up till my bb goes live :(

ill post some pics of the full setup as soon as i can, hopefully they'll piss off soon :D

i think it could be the dolby digital /dts bit, i dont remember setting that, i was just flicking thru adventure, sci fi etc

appreciate the help btw cheers

If it's anything like my Yamaha AV Amp (can't remember the model No. off top of head) if you turn the programme knob on the front of the receiver that goes through the sound settings i.e. stereo/movie/tv sports etc

lol ,women

there should be a button like the top blue one on mine. on mine this puts the sound into dd/dts note the dsp button next to the surround button, don't use these on mine tho as they are no way as good as yamaha dsp:evil: i just stick to a direct 7.1 signal.... the surround button also does pro logic 2 / dts neo when no 5.1 stuff is being fed basicly when watching tv. for music just put it in stereo so it just comes from left right and the sub... you should be able to get a on screen menu by connecting a phono from video out on the amp to tv, might help you a bit. there is also an option to change the size of speakers you are using, you should have all speakers set to small....

Nice house tiger. :) Very nice.

thanks mate, took me and my dad 4 months of going over after work and doing a bit every night, so relieved to get it finished :)

heres a few more:

my dad redone the original window seat with this ^ ignore the patches, filled the nail holes last night, still to get a last lick of paint

ok by the looks of it you need to push 1 of the numbers to set the sound mode so when playing music push number 1 ( stereo ) or number 8 ( direct stereo, plays the song as it is on the cd. id use stereo as you can then adjust bass and treble to get a better sound imo..) for movies it looks like you should push number 3 or 4 to put the amp in one of the dsp modes, this should also put it in surround. looks like number 5 will give you surround without the dsp's. number 6 what comes up when u push that? i don't think u will use number 7 as u only have 5 spks and sub, if in the future u get a extra rear speaker push this button to give a wider surroundsound as in 6.1 . an easy way to tell if the amp is in surround is to look under the volume numbers on the amp display and it will have 6 boxes lit if it is in surround. if you push the menu button that should take you to the amp menu ( look on amp display) where u will be able to change the speaker sizes, they might be on small already tho. another thing to change is each speakers volume level, knock these up 2-3 levels from std to improve the sound, should also be able to do this from the menu. by the way the setup looks very tidy and you've got a lovly front room:D edit that whole house looks good

thanks mate, number 6 lets you select pro logic, pro logic II, neo etc etc it said on the bose instructions to set all the speakers to large which i have done, ive got the tv hooked up to the receiver now like you said, alot better than the tv speakers, i didnt bother b4 as i thought it would be too loud.

i put bourne supremacy on to test, on any of the movie modes ie, sci fi etc, it still doesnt really sound right, id imagined to hear the bullets pinging all over the shop behind you etc but its not happenin...

hmm, not to sure about setting them speakers to large. when u set the amp to large spks it puts out a full range sound to the speakers ie 20hz -20khz. this will also kill the base as the sub won't hardly get a signal. try setting the amp to small spks as this will then put out a signal around 120hz -20khz to the 5 main speakers and give the sub loads more punchy bass(120hz-20hz), then up each spk level a bit should sound better then. a good film for surround effect is behind enemy lines ( the scene where the plane is get chased by the missile, brings the speakers alive:evil: ) i'll chuck bourne supremacy on in a sec and see if i can find a scene that sounds good...

just watched behind enemy lines, im pretty sure this still isnt set up right, throughout the whole film there was hardly anything coming from the rear or anything going from side to side etc even at the missile bit, i also cant get a menu up on screen, ive used video out on the amp to the tv via an s video cable..

should i be using pro logic or pro logic 2 in the amp settings?

Does your Amp not have a mic for automatic set up of all speakers and sub?

Use the test function, that will let you hear if they are set up properly.

Best films to test , are things like matrix, lord of the rings, Star wars. Digital Remastered Top Gun. PLanes sound Great.

use prologic 2 for tv, have u set the speakers to small yet? have a look in the manual for the amp, it should tell you how to get the on screen display up.

the receiver didnt have the mic for auto set up unfortunatley, ive set the speakers to small, cant seem to get the on screen display up at all, ill flick thru the manual again incase i missed it..

at last, ive friggin solved it! it was the audio settings in the actual dvd player menu, changed dolby/dts digital out to bitstream instead of pcm, whatever that does but its fixed it, the difference in sound is unbelievable!

thanks for the help with trying to sort it, appreciated :)

better go off and test this out properly with a good film now....

sorry i could'nt get on msn tonight been busy, glad to hear u got it sorted, i knew it would be something silly, have u changed the speakers to small yet, even more of an improvement;)

yep mate, kept them on small, black hawk down sounds amazing, pumped the level of the surround speakers up a bit too, sounds great, i knew it would be something daft like that as well, usually is, the reason i had it on that setting was to get audio via hdmi, read on a forum to change it to that, kept getting an error saying 'HDMI audio not supported' i dont need the sound thru hdmi now anyway as im using an optical cable

thanks again
