i got a 12mm one from halfrauds and it fits fine.

is it ok to fit the crankcase breather filter straight onto the crankcase or does it need to be on the end of the std breather hose.

like this! straight on is fine. no need for piping etc as it allows vapours to condense and sit in the pipe.
block off the joining pipe to inlet bend like pic 2.
