Cup to a Valver: making any sense?

The Cup is going soon, that much is absolutely certain (doesn't make it any easier though, almost brings me to tears thinking about it!) so I'm thinking about whats next. Budget for the new motor is £2k with insurance absolute tops, I'm 23 with 5 years no claims (paying about £600 on the Cup) so insurance isn't going to be a big concern as long as I'm reasonably sensible.

Anyways, a Valver looks like an interesting option, but as my intention is to save money I guess the question is: will it save me money? Things like tyres, servicing, all the little things that add up, but especially fuel consumption. Got some quotes and its only £260 on the insurance so I would have up to £1700 to spend, but ideally I would spend less.

As it stands I do about 15k a year, virtually none on the motorways, and I average 34mpg in my Cup. I'm looking to reduce mileage considerably by cycling to work and just using the car for pleasure, so one way or another the car (whatever car) needs to have some sort of a fun factor!

I'd get a diesel the Clio dci is 18k servicing. Brake pads £17 vs 40 for 172. Tyres are the cheap size 195/50/15. Road fund is £85. 55mpg if you drive hard 80 mpg if you take care.
There nowhere near a 172 performace wise but there cheap coilover one and its quite competant.

What about a Corsa/Nova TD then 100hp if you get a hammer and a few bits out to the engine and there loads of suspension etc bit so you can do a lot on them plus there litle electrics so any garage can fix them.

There not exactly the cheapest of cars to run, just depends I suppose. They do drink the petrol a bit, but obviously depends how u drive. The tyres and servicing are'nt too expensive really. If u only spend what u need to on one, no mods etc, then it should be pretty cheap, providing nothing goes wrong

if u can find a decent lowish milage 16v then go for it

ive thought about getting 1 in place of my mk2 a few times but its difficult to find a decent one with in reasonable condition and reasonably low mileage

Yeah that seems to be the problem, massive difference in values on them which isn't making much sense to me. Seen some for less than a grand with sub-100k miles that looks tidy as hell, but also seen plenty pushing £2k with 100k+ miles that are modded and look a bit shabby. So immediately I think 'whats wrong' with the cheap ones even though they may be fine.

Certainly a car that I would need to take my time over finding, probably best to go for a CSer or known garage that I won't get a complete lemon from.

Mileage doesn't mean much at all on 16v/Williams.

Get the best you can find.

prices are not level .just cos its cheap does not mean its bad and vise versa. usually its cheap because some one does not value it. bought a new car need the space etc. one that someone has valued spent money on they love it and think its worth more. look at the cheap ones and find a bargin.

ukaskew..a valver is a brilliant car if you look after it, you do the servicing etc when it needs it and it should be ok...just look after it really....and you know there good fun..

I'd reccommend a valver without a doubt

They aren't cheap to run by all means but well worth it......

As for fuel, they are not too bad..... depending on if you can resist the fun pedal on the right

Valver is a nice engine.....my 19 valver never went wrong and returned good MPG figures.

Like all cars that have been around for a few years there's now a huge difference in condition, some very bads example and equally some very good... price does not always reflect condition

Make sure you shop around look at a few just for lookings sake

I used to have a 172 and a valver i chose to sell the 172 so don't worry to much as the valver is still a blast to drive

Check for common things like cambelt change, gearbox problems, the clutch will feel heavy (thats normal) so don't be surprised

If your cycling to work then a valver will be ok to buy cuz when it breaks you can still get to work lol. Seriosly though, i love mine and the interior aint that bad. Just cuz you cliosport owners dont have oil temp and pressure guages to look at lol

If I get one it will be Clio number 4, I've had a MK1 in the past so I know roughly what to expect. The Cup interior isn't exactly plush anyway!

I love the interior on my valver.

only trouble is i have to drive the journey to work each day so would be driving whilst cold a lot as its not far

You'll notice the performance increase, so just make sure you pay more attention and of course the theft risk may increase with its far superior looks.

valvers a good choice m8!...allthough there not cheep 2 run! - theres always sum parts that need replacin or work that needs doin...but its all worth it!
