Looks mint, who do you use to do these for you?

i did them all myself, real carbon fibre skin as i said was a proper arse to do but worth it :)

Looks ace!

Where did you get the carbon fibre from? Does it come in a kit?

I'd sent my bump strips for Carbonnut to do about a year before he stopped trading so I'd like to have a go at this myself.

to be honest its an absolute arse and the carbon fibre is extremely nasty stuff, and the resins even worse. I got the carbon fibre mat off ebay, and wasted loads getting it wrong. You basically treat it the same way as fibre glass, cut the carbon to shape, resin it onto the piece, and then pour tonnes of resin on top. When its cured you need to cut off the edges with a dremel, and then sand the piece down tonnes and tonnes and then laquer it a million coats. If someone wants me to do them one they'd have to pay me a god damn lot of money ;)

  A slow one :-(
Looks well good mate. Look fwd to see it on your car! I really want one for my cup. Obviously a market for them!

Shouldn't be too much of a problem as I used fibre glass to make my install so I've had a bit of practice. Have you got the seller's name off ebay? Trying to search for the stuff on ebay is impossible as theres loads of immitations and crap for cars which I'm not interested in.

it was a one off on a roll, the seller had bought it to do some bits for his car. He sold it all off long ago. Your best searching on the net for some, sure there some suppliers? Not cheap however, i paid 45 quid for 1m x 0.45m so for an install your talking a lot more than that. would look good if you could do it however :)

No worries, cheers for the info. I just presumed you'd got it from an ebay retailer. I'll keep my eye out for some and have a little search on the net. Get some pics up when its fitted.

will do, if i come across anybody i will let you know, might do some more bits myself :) BTW if anyone wants to do this themselves where gloves, heavy clothing and a mask. The fibres from the raw carbon get on your chest and in your skin, i was itching for days after using it! Also even when sanding use gloves, i didnt and ended up with black patchs all over my hands which wouldnt come off due to the carbon being in my skin. Also use gloves when using the resin, if it gets on your skin you have to have it cut off :S

That looks very smart indeed! How did you make up the moulds for it?

the skin is bonded onto the insert itself, due to being able to fit it easily again. However if you wanted you could quite easily use the insert as a mould, then seperate the carbon fibre from the insert (when cured) and bond it onto the car, not sure on the best way to bond it though?

yep you got it! good price too... i got my resin from a specialist paint suppliers, sure theres someone off the net who sells it though

CFS do (same place as the link I've put up) but I think I've got some left over from the fibreglassing.

This could be a summer project when I finish uni and wait for the placement to start

  Chocolate Bar™
yeah i'd definatly wait till summer, resin will be quicker to cure and you'll be able to do it outside get rid of smell

i used polyester resin with hardener. which was 8quid for a litre from my local paint supplies. assuming you've mixed it correctly the resin shouldnt be that pink, and therefore when you put it on it actually covers over the stitches in the fabric. i initially didnt use enough hardener in the resin and it was wet, and stinking, for about 3 days lol

once you've got the knack of it, it isnt too bad to use. But i defintely wont be doing it again unless i have to :)
