CV boot question

does anyone know if you can split the driveshaft on the N/S to change the CV boot and does it need a specialist tool??
oh yeah its on a 1.2 8v W reg Clio.

actually got a split CV boot that you have to glue together...mmm strange.

there is a special tool to put them on. its not a good ides to cut it and glue it back together...

^^ You can actually buy gaitors from halfords that you fit by gluing together along a seam. I put one on my old car just before I sold it so im not sure if they are any good or not.

i was interested to know if the CV joints are secured to the end of the driveshaft by a circlip/whatever, or if they're built on and cannot be removed post-production but, not having had a look myself, haven't been able to confirm

the only way of getting a new boot over a CV that can't be removed from a shaft would be by way of a cone stretching tool (garages use an air powered gizmo; there are un-powered DIY versions) - and you'd have to use a rubber boot as it obviously needs to be able to stretch

given that the Renault boots are plastic, i'm guessing that it's possible to remove the CV from the end of the shaft - ?

alls ok...got a special boot that comes split and with a pack of glue so you stick it together..dont know how good they are but its not on my car so I dont care..hehe

I had a nick in my right CV boot, got a guy to fit a new one which was one of these kits.

A few month's later and i've just had a new drive shaft and CV boot fitted because it either wasn't done proberly or the kit was rubbish.

I would check it after 2 weeks to check its all right IMO

i've had split boots work fine, and also had them fall apart in a few weeks. The CV joint is held on the shaft with a circlip so can be removed to put a new boot on. Shaft has to come out and be put in the vice for this though really as the CV is a tight fit on the splines. Stretching a boot is quicker if you have the kit.

Prices on shafts from renault came down quite a bit recently, they were hugely expensive.
