Cylinder head cover - Cant get it loose

  182 trackday racer
Am about change cams in my 182 and have stripped everything down and removed all bolts to the cylinder head cover. Im following the instructions to gently tap the "lugs" but I just cant make the "glue" let go.

Are there any tricks how to do this?

you have removed the pullies haven't you?

Yes of cause, bolts, pullies, phase shifter solenoid, "engine lift loops" all of it has been removed.

Wish I could post an image but cant be bothered to upload on an external site.

Btw how do you mount the new exhaust cam stud? Do you use extra Loctite and tighten it with the old nut without the pully in place or what?

Went down to the garage today to try some of the things you suggested, sadly though nothing worked. Hit on it HARD with a rubber hammer. This this is stuck like a mother f**ker. Dont know what to do? Have not tried using a lever though but am afraid to crack the d**n thing.

Well this is what it looks like today.

Went down to the garage to try some more things, tried this:

- Using two screwdrivers as levers by the two front lugs and at the same time taping the rear two lugs. (protecting the lowert inlet with a thick bike tube)

- Using a thick piece of wood as protection hiting the front lugs with a sledge hammer.

- Removing the lower inlet and tapping the front lugs from beneeth.

-Leaving the car with the cams turned to put pressure on the cover

I think the glue have let go slightley in one of the corners, but besides from this nothing..... What shall I do?! Did they put some d**n NASA aerospace glue on my head cover or what :dead:

Can you get a wallpaper scraper in the gap you've made? If so, knock one in with a hammer?!

Honestly I dont know, maybe if I knock it in there. Not sure if it will come loose anyway nice it is such a small area that came loose.

Asek my mate that's a Renault mechanic and he had never heard anything like this. Just what I need.... :(

We get stuff like this day in & day out & the cloud factory, when sealant dries up. We usually whack something in there like a wedge or a scraper/screwdriver trying to take care not to damage the sealing face (sod the gasket, they're relatively cheap in comparison and easy to replace.)

Problem solved! Bought a wallpaper scraper and sharpend it and knocked in. Did not have to work it along for many centimeters before it all broke loose.

Good tip, thanks! :approve:

No worries, glad you got it sorted.

Well got some other problems though. The cams + the "bearings" show some light wear. Looks like the cylinder head may have been a bit to tight. Strange since Ive bought it with only 30000km on it, and Ive never touched it. Dont think it is to much to care about though since it went just fine even before. Ill fit new cams and tighten it to the right torque and just drive it.

Im afraid this is not normal wear, as there are some scrathes in the bearing glide surfaces. :( The only thing I can think of that may have caused it is remainders from the machining of the head.

Dont know If im fooling my self thinking that as long as all sharpness of the scrathces is polished away it shouldnt be a problem?!

What would you guys do?

It's difficult to tell, they're worse than mine.

Are you putting brand new cams in or just the old ones back in?

Was it previously all running fine?

Yes I will put brand new Colombo & Bariani cams in there.

Previously the car was running great, no funny sounds from the top. Never had an oilpressure issue, oil and filter changed every 4000km (2500miles) and I have a big oilcooler. I should say that there are no signs of anything running hot so I honestly dont think a lubrication problem directly caused this.

More likley reminders from production caused the scratches and a slightley over tightened top cover caused the wear. But its hard to tell realy.

They key question is offcause if the scratches will effect the lubrication in a bad way. Have no desire to drop cams in and get them screwd after one season.

nothing to worry about, just tidy up the deep ones, i've seen quite a few like that

the cams are steel and the head casing is ali, the cams aren't going to wear!

the car on standard cams at the moment Marten? Believe C&B are supposed to get good. Similar to Schrick.

Cheers for the info Fred a huge stone just fell from my heart.

Yes the car is at stock cams for the moment. It was due for belts so it would have been stupid not to do the cams at the same time. Planing to keep this car like forever and cams were on the to do list just not at this moment. But hey I think Ill be pleased ;)

Good point. if the belts are off why the hell not. Would be doing it myself this year, but the remap on top is a bit too much for me really :(
