Bounce the corner of the car, if you push down, it should rise and drop, settling in the normal position. If it bounces up and down like an american 70's barge the damper is shot-thought this was how the mot testers checked??
also take the off and listen for any funny noises when pushing them in and when they extend.
Have you checked the rear tyre pressures? Mine were out by miles due to the gauge I was using be over 10 psi out and thus gave squiffy handling. Adjusted them using a new gauge and its sorted, handles lovely. Shame just the tyre pressures cost me a set of new set of cup shocks though!
