Dealer caused damage & tried to wriggle out of responsibility!

  182 Trophy, Williams
Hello all!

Had my little 182 for about six months now, absolutely love it, so much I decided it's worth putting all the tiny niggles right as I intend to keep it for a long time. Made a massive snag list and took it to Sutton Park Renault in Coventry, just off the A45. Dealt with a great guy there called Stuart, very helpful throughout. Initially SPRenault were to find the cause of some water ingress into the passenger footwell and sort it out, which they did, and fit a new pump for the windscreen washers. Both of these things were carried out, and after two days labour finding and curing the leak and replacing said parts I was happy enough to part with best part of £300, safe in the knowledge that the job had been done, and done properly.

At the same time as carrying out the work I asked Renault to provide me with a quote for lots of other bits I intend to replace on the car. The quote came to nearly 2K. Almost as much as the car's worth, but rightly or wrongly I love my little 182 and I don't mind spending the pounds to get it absolutely showroom fresh as that's always how I've kept all my cars.

Upon collecting the car from the dealers, quote in hand, smile on face, I noticed on my journey home that the leather gear lever gaiter was dislodged and the plastic clip had been broken. I have no idea why they'd of had to remove it, possibly looking for water ingress, who knows. What I do know, having made a comprehensive snag list only a few days before is that it wasn't broken when I dropped the car off.
When I called, they said "the technician said he had noticed it". Confirming it couldn't of happened on my way home, and I know full well, 200% sure that it wasn't like that when it went in.

Stuart from SPR told me to bring the car right back so they could have a look, which I did. When I got their the Head Of Service (ironically) Debbie, immediately launched into a defensive monologue about how she didn't see how they could of caused the damage and I must be mistaken, etc.

Now, I've just spend £300 with SPR, I have an outstanding quote for nearly £2000 work I want done on the car, and this is an £18 part. Naturally at this point I'm baffled as to the inconceivable idiocy of a woman who thinks it's worth arguing with a customer with a huge quote outstanding over an £18 part, which they'd definitely broken.

Eventually, having asked why she was so willing to take her technicians word over mine and effectively insinuated that I was lying in order to try to fleece them out of £18, she begrudgingly, and I mean begrudgingly, huffed, "fine…we'll fix it then".

Sutton Park Renault aren't going to fix the £18 gear lever gaiter they broke, they're not going to complete the near two thousand pounds worth of work I want done to the car, they're not going to service or MOT my car or any of my future cars, or ever see me again.

With an attitude that poor, I'd rather buy the £18 part from Renault Parts Direct, fit it myself and never have to see Debbie's miserable little face again.

Farewell Sutton Park Renault Coventry, hello Renault Parts Direct and a good indie garage.

They're cheap and break all the time. Small self tapper where the original clip was will fix it.

£18 for a gear gaitor...they are pulling your pants down!!!

For parts, I would join here as Renault Parts Wolverhampton (Trader on here) is bloody good with his prices. Also, down/up in Chelmsley Wood is Fred at BTM (Another Trader) who knows his way around a 182...he also sources his parts from Renault Wolves...so you know you are getting genuine parts and cheaper service and he knows the F4R engine better than most dealers!

The £12 to become a member for the year gets you access to the guides and also traders where you will more than save the £12 in a matter of a couple of days! Also, you get a pack so you're not paying £12 just to view the sections, so is money well spent. :)

Welcome Tom.
For future reference, speak to Fred at BTM. He's only by Birmingham Airport, so not far and will save you a fortune.

Take it to a specialist and the price of the work will no doubt be cheaper, and you'll get better service anyway!

Wonder why they took it off? I also broke mine, the clips on them are s**t!

There's a great little indie near me that I trust, only reason I didn't take it there is because he's got his hands full rebuilding my other motor and I needed the leak fixed pretty quickly. I'll check out BTM and other recommended places though. Would love some advice on the best places to get cheap OEM parts have to say!

In the six months I've had it, we've swapped the engine after the belt snapped and destroyed the original. I'm now in the process of trying to replace every bit of worn interior trim (so basically every bit of plastic Renault fitted to the car) and get it all back to looking brand new. Not worth the money I know, but as I say it's worth it to me to have a perfect one.

Dashboard and steering wheel seem to be the expensive bits. There's nothing horribly wrong with the original, just a few minor scuffs but I'd like it to all be perfect. I know lots of people will say not to bother.

All in all a new alternator, dashboard, steering wheel, climate control buttons, radio, suspension refresh would come in at around 2K from a Renault main dealer. Will be finding an alternative way to using SPR now though, so probably end up a lot cheaper anyway!

Thanks for all and any recommendations and advice!

People buying used Renaults have to quickly be made aware that you under no circumstances take the car to Renault. It's like buying a real Rolex from a gypsy for a 1/10th of the price then taking it back to him when you need the battery changed.

Steering Wheels retrims are done by a lad called Snappy on here. (Do a search for his name).

Parts, its Ad @ Renault Parts Wolverhampton all day long. If Ad can get you a decent price, he will...I got a new front shock for £42 Renault wanted nearer £65! and it is Genuine Renault parts as well...not ECP or a dodgy copy. :)

I think Debbie should be put in charge of this initiative. She's doing a sterling job as an ambassador for all independent garages in the midlands area!

Cheers Don, will check wolves out. Had a look at snappy wheels, want one that looks bang on OEM, couldn't see any snappy's that did. They all looked better quality that Renault's if anything, but I want it to look totally stock.

Really? I'll give him a shout in that case!

Thanks for the info everyone…Owned many cars, this is my first Renault, still learning where to go for things!

Will have a word and see if he can do one without the centre line. Don't much object to the stitching or materials, but as much as I like the centre line it's a bit too different from stock for my liking. They look absolutely superb though!

Actually stumbled across your wheel last night Marc, hope the troubles with your blown plug are sorted now!

Lol!!!

What is wrong with it ? £2000 is a mad amount to shell out on a car not worth much more than that.

I agree it is a mad amount, but I've driven and owned countless sports cars/classic cars/super cars and the Renault 182 is just my favourite car, so I want a perfect one. Even if I spend more than the car's worth I don't mind, I've spent 30k on porsches and not been as happy with them as the little 182 makes me, so it's worth the cash to have one that I know is perfect.

At some point, when the right Trophy comes up I'll buy one for the collection, but I want a minter of a standard 182, that I can use everyday and put guilt free miles on, which I wouldn't want to do to a T.

I am aware that no sane person would sink 2K into a standard 182. I'm also aware that if I could stop loving cars and driving as much, me and the mrs could have a lovely big house. At the moment she's not, and for as long as I can get away with it I'd like to make sure my car's are minters! :)

Jesus mate, what the hell are you getting for £2000? If you give that to a dealer you have no common sense. Write what you're after in this thread and I bet people will be able to give you a rough price. Adam at Wolverhampton, please ring him before you spunk any more money up the wall

What does it need doing though ?

Replacing lots of worn interior trim; Whole dashboard top, steering wheel, climate control module, radio, gear knob, possibly drivers seat, usual stuff that wears.

Want to give the suspension a good going over and find cause for play in front left, believe it to be ball joint, but would like to refresh any suspension parts that need it.

Wheels could do with a refurb' - don't fancy the speedlines so will just refurb the originals.

Other bits that all add up, new alternator as current one's whining a bit, front splitter, cracked front fog lamp, headlights if I can't sand and polish out the yellowing, any black plastic exterior bits if they can't be bought back to life using some products….

Basically the bodywork is absolutely sound and straight as a knife, engine's great because we just swapped it, all the stuff that day to day use over 8 years has worn away I'd like to refresh… I know it's a bit OCD, but I'd like to sort it and then keep it perfect.

In hindsight I would of, but I only bought it to run around in while the engine on my merc was being rebuilt so found one that was in good shape but only a few grand. After driving it for a few months I decided I was going to keep it. Could swap it for one in better condition but I know this one now…better the devil you know and all that...
