Dealer Pics, Pickup Wednesday!

  Megane 225 Turbo
In my quest for maturity and economy, it has led me to where I am now. A year ago I purchased a 55 plate Megane 225 FF, with every option going. I adored that car. FRSH, new brakes and tyres, the works... But something was wrong.

It had done 50k and it didn't feel right after a few weeks. Anyway, I won't bore you with the full story but it's ended up costing me over £2k this year alone to keep it on the road, needless to say none of that £2k is on brakes or tyres or other "expected" consumables. Every component of the steering and wheels have fallen apart or imploded since January resulting in this cost.

The car was from a main Renault dealer who at first weren't interested saying it was wear and tear, even though the problem was originally reported to them a few weeks after buying. After the threat of legal action they backed down and agreed to give me a very good price for the Megane, on the premise I had something more practical and cheaper to run. So here we are...

It's a Clio GT dCi 106 in white, with Carminat TomTom and Climate as options. Not exactly an exciting car but £0 road tax and sod all to insure, aswell as a quoted 64mpg, although I expect a little unrealistic better than the 22mpg I get now!The dealer sent me these pics today:

And finally, "My Baby" goes back to probably be shipped off somewhere. A bit of a bitter-sweet moment as I love the car, but it's the preverbial Friday afternoon, the steering now creeks again (there's nothing left to replace!) and it needs a cambelt and major service, aswell as an MOT and new tyres within the next 3 months, so financially, a clever move to get rid of it.. Still hurts though...

Will let you all know what I think of the GT when I get it Wednesday. Have heard the Petrol is a bit limp, as you'd expect but heard reasonable things about the Diesel. Let's face it, it's no Megane so I can't really compare, which perhaps is a good thing!

Looks good :D

Shame about the meg, did you end up paying much for the GT or did renault give you enough to cover the cost?

They'll lose a lot of money on the Megane, put it that way.

I'll get this "maturity" out of my system over the next 3 years then go buy a 250, brand new this time though.

Already have, I'm a member.

Just going to leave it standard though, had enough ballaches with warranties and finding out how Renault have an amazing aptitude for wriggling out of just about everything, I figure I'll leave it standard then when it invariably goes wrong I can honestly say it's nothing I've done.

yum im expecting a in depth review an videos :D

you are aware the road tax is 90quid a year after the first year ?

That's actually a really nice looking car, for a diesel Clio! Might have to do some investimagating for when the Bora pops its clogs...

I really like these, although I feel they are underwheeled, they look small and aren't the best of designs.

Shame about the meg, love that colour on them.

I ordered a GT in white as well, but the petrol version, it should be coming end of this month, i cant wait. Hows the car going for you?

It's OK really. I haven't been to a petrol station yet and am convinced the fuel gauge is broken as it doesn't move. I can get used to that very quickly.

Still miss the Megane, think I always will. It's not "never", just not "now" and I should be grateful at 23 to have a brand new car anyway, considering it's my 4th brand new one since 18!. Just miss my Megane...

Still the diesel engine has made me smile a couple of times, it's nice a pokey low down, I've had to adjust the way I drive a bit but I'm stunned by the economy and how much more comfortable it is than the Megane. Many a time the Megane was so harsh and so "sledgehammer" in it's approach to everything it became a bore and laborious to drive, this doesn't, it's very comfortable and I wouldn't mind a long drive in it anywhere, which is something I did and regretted many-a-time in the Megane.

All in all? It's no slouch but no Megane either, but you wouldn't expect it to be. It's much cheaper to run and purely because of the manufacturers warranty will cost me less to keep on the road.

It's very difficult to place your head over your heart though! The wheels are too small, the ride is too high, but then it's not an RS so it would be. Do I want to compromise the fact it's ridiculously comfortable for bigger wheels/lowered suspension on a car that's never going to get the most out of them anyway? No.

I'll keep it standard and enjoy the comfortable and cheap ride for the next 3 years, even though it will be a bit unexciting.
