Decisions, decisions...

My mate is the sales manager of my local Renault dealer and I can get a very nice discount off a new Clio, so I am now wondering whether to swap the Rallye in for a shiny new Cup or 172!

Thing is... which one do I get?!

Bearing in mind that I have a Rallye now and so a Cup is the nearest modern day equivalent and "all the toys" are not neccesarily top of the list. But, I might want all the toys in a couple of years time, as Id plan to keep the thing for 3 years.

Or... do I just save my money and stick with the 306?!

new car deffo. the rallye is a beauty and theyre pretty damn rare but i think the fact that youre always on here and youve been thinking about a clio for a while shows u really want one!

You know what im gonna say so lets just go buy a Red Mk2 eh?:D

You could easy strip the back out, personally i reckon the 172 will hold value better than the Cup..... (is that controversial?!)

As much as I would like to say get a 172, i think your gonna be better off with the Cup.

You wont miss the toys cause youve had a rally already. Only thing to ask yourself is can you do without ABS, which you have been so far.

So is ABS important to you ?

The Rallye has actually got ABS and my 106 GTi before that had it too, but Ive had other cars without it and although it is a good safety feature I could live without it...

Rich, I went from a 306 Rallye to a Cup and ( hand on heart ) can tell you that the Cup is the sharper tool. Not knocking the Rallye in any way, it is a Class motor, but when I went for a test drive in a Cup then jumped back into my Rallye it just felt really flat and not as tight as the Cup. The Cup is also a more modern motor in looks, dont get me wrong Rallyes and GTi-6s still look the biz but the lesser 306 models look well dated now. The Cup also has leccy windows /mirrors/trip computer/CD/alarm which the Rallye lacks. Performance wise, it will keep up with CTRs.....say no more..... Do it !!!

Yeah, I should have PMd you earlier actually mate...

I had a very good drive in a Cup before I got the Rallye and nearly bought one, but at the time they were new and only going for list price, plus Id just bought my house, so decided a used car was a more sensible option, so the Rallye was about 1/2 the price of the Clio.

But, now I am seriously tempted by this offer!

So, how does the Cup compare in terms of fuel economy?!

The 306 is bad on fuel and thats the only real downside for me.

How else does it compare to the 306 in terms of say ride, handling, road noise, comfort, running costs, reliability, etc...

Still not sure whether or not to go for a Sport instead and get all the extras as I do plan on keeping this for at least 3 years and Ill be 30 (old man) then, so by that time I might not want to be driving about in a stripped out racer.

Although, I drove a Cup with only about 100 miles on the clock, then jumped straight into a mk2 172 with about 8000 miles on the clock and I did notice the difference, so thats always in my mind.

Think I need to get out of the Rallye and straight into a Cup and see how it compares, which is summat I aint done... yet! ;)

Rich, I am 32 so dont worry about the age thing. I went from a 106 Rallye to a 306 Rallye to a Cup so you can kinda guess I like the stripped out hot hatch thing.

Fuel economy wise the Cup is fantastic. Running Optimax/SuL I have gone from 25 quid a week with the Rallye to 20 with the Cup. The trip computer is always 34 - 35 mpg and that is with commuting and ragging it.

Handling wise , the 1.3 106 Rallye will never be beaten in handling terms for me, but I reckon the Cup is closer than the 306 . The Cup also suffers less Lift off oversteer than the 306 but torque steer is more of a problem. As Evo mag say, the Cup is the new 205 1.9 GTi in handling terms.

Comfort wise the Cup is a step up from the Rallye though I prefer the Rallye dash. Why dont Renault to an oil temp gauge???

All I can say is read recent postings about the Cup on Scoobynet, read what Evo think, have a test drive back to back with your Rallye. You will buy!

Think I need to talk figure with my mate then... :D

A lot of the decision will be how much I am offered for the Rallye as I aint taking a low price for it.

Will talk about pennies and have a drive in one (aint driven a Cup for months) and see how it goes.
