Dell Laptops

Anyone got one ? Good ? Bad ?

Looking at purchasing my first ever laptop, Dell seem to be cheap and quite good value for money, will be used to internet/poker/mailing/burning etc. Not gaming, will continue to use a desktop for that.

DELL have the Inspiron Series with what i have speced up to be about £440 for a 15.4" screen or £530 with a 17" screen.

Absolutely amazing. Lightning quick, small, wicked battery life.
GF has one with a 15.4" screen I think its a Inspiron not bad, but mines better!!

those little XPS are great! got a few at work of the old 1210s but we use business models usually.

you are cheaper specing up memory and HDDs yourself rather than from dell imo.

the XPS is a little more than i want to spend, the only real difference is the graphics card and a bit more processing power, i wont be gaming heavily on it. for what i need the INSPIRON will be good enough, i can upgrade the processor/memory and have a 17" screen instead of a 15.4" and still be cheaper than the base XPS Range....

mine is an inspiron and its fine, only reason i bought another was because i broke the screen on it

Yeah, look at the Vostro range over Inspiron. Basically the same but the Vostro is much better built, more solid and cheaper. Got mine last week and well happy with it.

If you are looking at getting one and can wait a few months there's a new E series coming, looks very sweet.

Ive had a vostro for about 6 months now when i bought it it was an absolute bargain! Got about £1200 worth of kit for less than 650 delivered including vat!

Can fault the vostro, much better than inspirons!

ive got a D420. its tiny and you can get the newer upgraded D430 quite cheap. i use it for everything from browsing the internet to video editing and its like having a small book in my bag, perfect if you can live without an internal optical drive. Two of my mates have bought M1330's which are good if you want better graphics. Ive always bought the models aimed at business customers as they have the better build quality

I go through a lot of these at my work.. dell is our main supplier. They are pretty good for the most part but the most recent laptop I ordered will not read CD's.. it will read dvd's though (yes its supposed to read cd's ;) )

Its under warranty so I could send it back but I litterally do all my work on my laptop so I can't really do without it !

I got an Inspiron 1520 and it had that GF8600 graphics card plus I upgraded it to 4GB and had a T7500 CPU in it. Runs Vista fine and I can play WoW and tab out and use photoshop or run high def videos and it never chugs.

For that spec I couldn't find anything cheaper. In fact nothing came close.

That might not be the case for £300 entry level machines or £1800 top of the range machines but for the mid range that I was looking for Dell were best value. I was so impressed with mine that when my mother needed a new laptop we got her the entry level 1520 for about £450.

I have just been looking at getting a new XPS, shame they only have a rubbish graphics card on offer in the 1525 now. My mothers has that card and it can struggle with high def videos unless you turn aero off.

The Dell build was very stable although as with most companies you spend the first few hours uninstalling a load of pre-bundled sh*te. But apart from that it was very good where as a friend of mine has a Vaio and is having niggling problems e.g. the integrated webcam not working on MSN by saying it is "already in use by another application". I have to spend tonight trying to fix that where as Dell's seem to be very well tested, compatible and bug free.

Thanks to the guy that posted the code on page 1! I was looking at the XPS but now I have an additional £100 off so I ordered it!

I use a 640m that i bought last year with core 2 duo 2Ghz. The only thing i can say about the Inspiron range is the build quality. My left mouse button 'springyness' wore out but i do use the laptop all day every day. I also manage to get 5 to 6hrs out of the high capacity batteries i got for it too.

We have a load of M1330s for sale with the WLED screens, 2GB, 160GB, DVDRW and some still with Dell warranty until 2011.

I spec'd one up on Dells site earlier and it came to £940 :0

Anyone interested in any give me a PM and i can send you the service tags.

lol i ordered mine ( before this thread was found) on saturday morning, predicted delivery of 19th may and came today. typing on it as we speak, nice alpine white gloss inspiron.

Yeah mine is the 15th I think! So annoyed!

Really happy with my Inspiron, selling it to my bro as he was impressed with it and loved the screen.

im on a dell inspiron 1720 now, its pretty cool, was running photoshop illustator and dreamweaver all at the same time earlier and was fine!

high gloss screen is slightly annoying to use during the day, anywhere

mine came with high gloss screen even though i didnt order it. not going to complain though as it should cost more, think it looks pretty cool but i know what you mean about the reflections...

  306 TD Slut
yeah right now it looks sweet because im in a dark room and theres no glare from any windows, but the other day i was trying to use it on the train, which i gave up on in the end! too many moving lights and shadows etc..

Yeah in daylight and when running from the battery it can be hard to see it. But all other times it looks amazing. I remember when I ordered mine it did warn on the option that the screen would be worse for reflections. I had the old type screen on my D510 or D500 or whatever it was and yeah it had no reflections but it didn't look half as good.

I'm on my new XPS M1530 now - and its awesome! Its so quick and it looks the bee's knee's too. Black cover and chrome keys/inside. Well impressed with DELL so far.

  Better than yours. C*nt.

Latitude ATG D630 are the best for that - the screen gets rediculously bright if you need it to. Only downside is that the resolution is only 1280x800, which IMO is a bit small. I loved the old D600/D610/D620 panels, they were brilliant, it's a shame they had to use the lower resolution for these but at the same time I suppose legibility had to come into it and given the environment it's designed for it's great.
