Dell Poweredge S1420 - 2nd CPU upgrade

hi,

i have been trying to install a second cpu to this server, it has a 3.2Ghz Xeon Processor and i got another 3.2Ghz processor to put in it.

When i put the processor in the system wont post, the system posts fine with 1 prcoessor, i was wondering is there somenthing i need to do in the bios or something as the cpu was working when it was taken from another server.

Nope, should just work.

Are you sure they match ?

CPU identifiers need to match (both Xeons of the same generation and number of cores etc) and also if it has seperate VREGs you'll need to get one of those in for it as well.

If it's the SC1420 (Can't find an S1420?) then it does indeed have seperate Voltage Regulator Modules (Dell term VRM):

ah yeah its sc1420

ah rite, i didnt kno it had a voltage regulator, so if i get the regulator then it should work?

Yeah, servers tend to have everything that's ever failed on them as a plug in module, as it saves time/money when it goes wrong. Good bit of design IMO, had a VReg go on a PE2850 and it was just a pull out plug in affair and it came back to life!
