Dephaser........ To change or not to change?

  Clio Sport 172
My car is currently in for timing and auxilary belt changes...... The garage called me and said that it is recommended to change the valve timing pulley which i hear is also called a dephaser .

I have a clio 172 (air con model) on 50,000miles, there is no problem with the dephaser (that i know of), it's not making any funny noises or crunching as some people have mentioned on here...... Apparantly they cost around £130 just for the part!!!!

Anyways my question is........ Is it worth changing or not???

yes

imo definitley, because if it goes you will be forking out a full cambelt change again

unless you know for a fact that it has had oil changes every 6 months since leaving the factory

Hell yes! Get it done.

My dephasher went and it cost about £400 to fit! This was only a couple of months after getting the belts changed :(

It's not got any service history so not sure about oil changes, I bought it on 48,000...... Service is my next job!!! :S

I wouldn't ever change one if it wasn't noisy before hand.

You should take note that none of the people that say do it as a matter of course are technical

danny, does the noise they make mean they will fail and casue problems? or is the only problem they make the noise? mines getting quite loud now but isnt due a belt for ages so duno weather to get it changed or not?

it's never going to fall to pieces. Can start to cause running problems when they get really bad, flat spots randomly thrown in.

How long ago was yours done?

done in december 2009, full aux kit and cam kit, so everything other than the dephaser, by queens service in leeds who are meant to be ok concerning belt changes. now on 71000, was on 68000 when it was done

you'd be fine with just a new cambelt on that, no full kit needed if that's genuinely all the miles it's done. Should treat the original full change as the start point for the next due date though

  CLIO 172 CUP....
i had never had mine done when i had the belts done 3 months...still fine. but yeah think you shoud get it done tho...best bet.

i always inform customers, and then its upto them to decide, at least then if it stars rattling 6months down the line i'm not to blame!

its £166 off the top of my head, but as per usual, please only go to someone who has done one before and knows what they're doing (AND HAS THE RENAULT ONLY TOOLS) rather than "oh its a good garage, i've used them for years" - cars have changed a lot faster than most old boys skills have!

I didnt change mine when i did my belt, but i have the renault tools and did the work myself so if it goes wrong ill just change it.

Yours might be fine, but it could also go wrong. So you have to decided spend the £160 now and have piece of mind that its been changed, or you can leave but there is a possibility it could go wrong 10,000 miles down the line and you will have to buy one anyway and pay the labour to have it fitted o ntop.

Been as your paying a garage to do the job id just bite your lip and pay the £160 for the pulley.

Get it done tbh, and waterpump while you're at it. The additional cost is negligible vs the cost of all the labour and a new pair of belts if it needs replacing a few thousand miles after you've had the cambelt done.

you got your poo pushed in

I lied. I just checked my invoice and it was £150 for dephasher inc. fitting. It was the cam & aux that pushed my total bill over £450 :(

Surely for the sake of £150-160 it's worth doing though? We might not be mechanics but I'm guessing the people who have commented in this thread have been stung by not having it replaced during a previous belt change. Unfortunately it's something I wasn't informed of when my first belt change was done so naturally I was a bit shocked when I found out the belts had to be changed again due to the dephasher pulley going :(

I still say get it done, you may as well!

thats the thing, if the full kit was just changed, all you needed was a new cambelt, which comes in at under £30. If people querie it with me, they get told the pulley will be changed for a little more than cost if a problem starts afterwards

I think retail on a dephaser is £171 now

mines just gone and last year i had loads of work done and it cost £550 for eveything end of last september, now its making strange noises again, so its a new one at the cost of £445, not good

My mrs has just bought a 172 and it's tapping a bit, cambelt was done 5k ago, I'm thinking this wasn't done!!

How much would I be looking at to change it? Can it be adjusted?
