Detailed - Focus ST3 in Sea Grey owned by Russ.

  Megane R26
Today's detail saw me travel to sunny Stone, to give my mate Russ' newly acquired Ford Focus ST3 a bit of love. I agreed to do what I could in the 8 hours or so that I had...

A few pics of the car when I arrived:

I started with the wheels, arches and tyres, and set to work with my new favourites - Autosmart Smart Wheels and G101. I stand by my view that this is the best combo for the money - they were flawless yet again today.

However, I did have a small problem...

P1020101.jpg

Luckily, I had some Tardis to hand, which quickly dealt with this heavy contamination. However, the back of the wheels still need a bit of care, which Russ is going to take of himself when the weather improves a bit (Russ - let me know if you want some Tardis mate)

Next up, the car was snow foamed using 60ml of AS AutoWash and warm water:

Pretty good cleaning:

Next up, the car was rinsed with my Nilfisk E140, hand washed with Zymol Bucket, Sonus Mitt and Dodo BTBM, then onto the claying. I used Elite Poly Clay with Born Slippy lubing it up.

As I began claying, I noticed large chunks of tar all over the car, so these were dealt with first with Tardis and an MF, then onto the claying. The used claybar:

Not too bad at all...

Next up I dried with my new AS Drying Towels (great towels!). A few 'after wash pics':

Next up, the car was moved into the garage (a god send today, was a bit nippy!!), and the paint was assessed.

Overall, it wasn't too bad - just general swirling, with a few stone chips and a few RDS's, particularly on the bonnet. I was struggling to get my camera to focus, but here are a few pics of the swirling/paint defects:

The paint averaged about 180, with some higher and lower readings in places, but plenty of paint and a good, even coat:

After trying a few combinations, I was getting near 95% correction with Dodo Juice Lime Prime, on a Planet Polish Hex Ring Green Polishing Pad, worked by my Chicago Rotary.

Again, I struggled with the focus on my camera, but here's a 50/50:

and corrected paint:

I did step up to 203S in parts on a yellow Hexo Ring Pad, and did my best to address the RDS's, but in most cases we decided to leave them for today. The worst part was the bonnet, which had some very deep scratches, but Russ is intending on getting his front end resprayed anyway, so I corrected the swirling, and left some of the deeper RDS's. If I'm honest, they needed wet sanding, which is beyond my level of capability at present.

Anyway, some afters after the polishing stage:

After correction, I opted for Auto Smart 'WAX', which I have been testing on my own car, with very impressive results - great sheeting and beading, which will make this car a breeze to clean for the coming months. This was followed with a Britemax #6S wipedown.

Glass was cleaned with Megs Glass Concentrate, tyres dressed with CG NLTG and exhausts polished with Megs NXT

A few finished pics, but unfortunately the lighting wasn't the best :(

Cheers,

Great work. Need to give my ST some TLC, but it can wait until spring when it will be having a front end respray also!

Now has anthracite wheels and eibach springs to be fitted shortly.

Had mine nearly 2 years and it still keeps me well entertained!!

Thanks Tom :)

How's Adam's car looking these days? Did the Vintage hold up well over Winter?

Last time I saw it the car was looking great :) I will probably be seeing him again tomorrow, I am guessing he will be in contact soon about getting it done again :D

Will do, yup he has. I have been using it on my car when he hasn't been looking ;) He didn't attach it properly from the looks of things!

Still not got my car sorted, had a few issues since we last spoke. An uninsured driver reversed into my car and my work have announced we are relocating to Warwick. Good news is if I move there with them and stay I will get a bonus so that should pay for all the work :D

How's your car going?

Mine is going now I've got all the warranty work done and it's mint. R26 or maybe an ST after today.

Be good to get it all sorted :)

Dumb question, but what does the paint detector do?

It tells you how many microns there are between the detector and the metal surface of the car. You can use this to assess how much clearcoat you have to work with (as a rough guide) and more crucially how much clearcoat is being removed when you are correcting the swirls, scratches etc.

Generally speaking, you have about 60 primer, 30 paint, then the rest is clear, but this will vary.

More expensive items give a proper break down of each layer, and work on plastic too, but you're looking at the best part of £1000!

Very nice, get some pictures up once you have it :)

It is off to Fred's on Monday to get a few goodies fitted/some weight removed :approve:

Do german cars show a higher reading than say, french cars?

My Clio had a micron depth of between 150-185 all over.. thought that was pretty deep..?

Looking forward to 20th

Me too dude :) Not got my teeth into a RB car before, should look great!

I keep saying 1 a weekend, but I have a 172 Cup to do now, then an Impreza and Octavia next weekend. I never get to clean my own car!

Hi everyone,

Few more pics for you all to look at that ive taken today. Cant stress how good a job Russ has done on the car. Would recommend him to anyone. He worked his sack of yesterday as well. He really did look fucked at the end of the day lol.

I really didnt want to drive it. Russ however persuaded me to put my dreamscience remap on which made me desperate to drive it again lol.

Nice work, the amount of correction that can be achieved with Lime Prime is suprising to say the least!

Lovely car - Do you reckon you may have convinced Russ to sway back to Ford? lol

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Only time will tell. He certainly enjoyed his passenger ride in a mapped ST lol.

  Audi TT 3.2 V6
Will be around 270bhp and 350lb/ft torque iirc. Just trying to find out the claimed power of the map i used now so i can give you a more accurate figure

Cheers guys :)

Thanks for the pics and the feedback Russ, massively appreciated.

I'm even more knackered tonight after doing a 172 Cup - probably my most challenging car yet!!

  Maybe a 172 Cup..
Superb work mate. Love Sea Grey my favourite colour in the Focus. Any pics of the cup Russ?

They look really nice in that dark grey! So much nicer than the usual orange/blue

Fantastic results, on a particularly rare looking colour. It is up in Cumbria, anyway. I think I've only seen one that colour. The rest are either orange or white.

Very nice. Good work Russ's.
