diagnostic plug



  Renault Clio 1.8 RSi


does anybody know what the diagnostic plug located in the fuse box in the passenger footwell is used for, and dont say diagnostics!! im guessing its used by renault to diagnose faults, but what sort of stuff does it tell you?

fault codes probably... codes from ECU when it detects a problem or abnormality with one of the sensors.

Hi Rich

The diagnostic socket is indeed used for diagnosing faults on your car.

We plug in a laptop computer and can view all the systems on your car and hopefully find out what (if anything) has gone wrong.

It serves no purpose for the owner.

It is also known as an OBD (On Board Diagnostic) which alledgedly the Police force will be able to plug in a READER to make sure your car is running correctly and not causing unnecessary pollution!

Big Brother IS watching you.

my excuse will be it came out the factory running rough..

there aint a jury in the land that wouldnt buy a plea like that.
 


Can we have another socket fitted? one that connects to a dummy ecu that just gives perfect figures for the police to check?

I heard something like this before, an insurance company was goin to set up "black boxes" in cars that would monitor where the car is, how fast it is going, and how far it has driven etc., they reckoned that insurance would drop like mad because the insurance company could trace the car, you wouldnt speed and instead of paying a yearly premium you would pay insurance per mile that you drive and would come out of your bank at the end of the month.

Not exactly what I was trying to find but near the mark.

For the car owner
EOBD checks are also likely to become part of the annual MOT test, either alongside or integrated into the emissions test. Any vehicle with the malfunction indicator lamp illuminated or with any recorded faults, including intermittent faults, will fail the test. The MI lamp will be located in the instrument cluster and, under normal operation, it should come on with the ignition and extinguish once the engine is started. If a fault is detected that will significantly effect emissions, the lamp will be illuminated to alert the driver. If the lamp flashes, it indicates a misfire that may cause damage to the catalyst. The vehicle should be checked as soon as possible in both cases.

It is expected that it will also become an offence to drive a vehicle with the warning lamp on.

So, If your warning light is ON, the the old bill will have to see if its a genuine fault. How will they do this? With an EOBD socket reader?
