Digital SLR for £300

Yes there are a million and one posts about DSLRs.

I have the chance for a Nikon D50 for £300...

I'm unaware of photo quality so want to know whats best to go for.

Going to be used for portraits of family/friends

Really i'd like to spend £50 but i know you get what you pay for.

I'd like them to look professional so clear image etc with a nice standard lens?

Are standard lens s**t??

Does it make a big difference buying a good lens??

Is there a package online which you'd suggest is perfect for what i'd use it for.

One that comes with the addtional lens.

I know this is vague and very noobish but it has to be able to make images with blurred back grounds. so a big sensor?? meh i won't complicate it but you know what i mean!

Standard Nikon lenses are ussually pretty good. A standard lense (usually about 30-80) would be fine for your uses. Only other lenses you may need would be a wide angle lens for wide angle shots, or a longer / telezoom lense for greater magnification over distance, but if you only want it for normal pictures and family stuff a standard Nikon (Nikkor?) lense will be more than sufficient.

The D50 standard set-up you mentioned is pretty good, used one a few times and quite impressed with it. Not sure what price they normally go for, but its definately a good, solid, reliable camera. Not too sure what else is around at the moment, im still using the old film camera, love it!

Just looked and D50 seem sto come with a 18-55mm lense! But should still be fine for most stuff

PS I don't claim to be an expert on digital photography!

my point and shoot is worth more than that !!! Produces just as good photos too.

DSLR's are the way forward though, you wanna produce good shots then grab yourself one. Aslong as you intend to use it to it's full extent. Even my Point n shoot seems to have a very very limited functionality when i want to take "complex" shots and it can become rarther frustrating.
