Directline & Mods

  Turbo'd MX-5 MK4

I phoned up Directline last night to find out if they would charge me more to add a stainless steel exhaust to my policy, only to be told that they do not allow modifications to cars unless you are 25 or over, WTF?? I would have thought they would atleast allow it at an extra cost?, Is there anyone with directline under 25 with mods? I find this a bit difficult to believe, and I have paid my insurance off with them all in one go only just, so id rather not cancel my ins and get the money back, and then go with someone else just to fit an exhaust? Nightmare!!

I had a punto with direct line from age of 17, i put it on 17s, full sus, exhaust, induction, 2K stereo and they were fine with it. 2 years later they said the employee who said i could have these mods made a mistake and i was uninsured for the past couple of years even though i was paying them and mods were noted on insurance document. Had ago at them and said i brought mods after they said insurance was ok, so they had to carry on insuring me and they did so. THERE EMPLOYEES ARE THICK. No offense meant. Just i havent spoken to anyone in that company who had any common sense. I even had one bloke try to tell me engine size didnt matter and it was only desirability of car that mattered(wheels, body shape etc). YEAH RIGHT. Cant see a 172 and 1.2 clios costing same on insurace or being differnet cos they have different wheels

Theres actually a bit of truth in that. You see if you did your escort ~(example) up like a cosworth- it be comes more deseriable to car theives, which in turn would put your premium up.

Yeah thats just like a body kit though. You do pay extra for boykit, bigger wheels, exhaust etc but i am sure it would cost more to insure a plain escort with a cossie engine in it, than a escort with a cossie kit. Maybe we should test. I will buy a plain escort, you buy a cossie. We will swop engines. So you get a 1.8 zetec engine in your cossie shell and i get a cossie lump in my escort. Then we can see who gets insured for less. Then we RACE.

Plus we arent swopping engines over again.

My experience of direct line is that they tell you something completely differenty every time you ring up.

Had a bit of a shock when we rung to insure the new 172 werd just bought and they said it would be 3 grand! muppets.
