do i have a dephaser pulley problem? please help? (not dephaser pulleys again)

  clio sport 182
hi people, im new here and I was wondering if any one can help? please excuse my writing punctuation etc!
I have a clio 182 and its sounding more and more like a diesel and now its got quite bad when warm on tick over and from all the posts ive read here it sounds like a dephaser pulley on its way out so I gave it to my mechanic and told him what I thought it was, now he has it stripped down but he says there is no play in the dephaser pulley and that with the covers off the engine he says its not a rattle but the noise sounds like its coming from all the cylinders! would this still be the dephaser? obviously its quite pricey parts to replace if that's not the problem, any help would be greatly appreciated, im desperate to get my car back sounding smooth again!

If there's no movement in the dephaser the water pump is the next most likely cause.

would I be able to feel play in the water pump? and why does this make the car sound like a diesel? does it mess the timing up?

Ive done a stupidly loud dephaser pulley before, had no play in the pulley however, new dephaser sorted it.

the noise does go away when the revs increase?
does the tapping come from all the cylinders when u have a faulty dephaser?
can someone tell me why it makes the engine so tappy when its on its way out? is it to do with timing?

im in a real dilemma now, my mechanic has just told me that he really doesn't think it is the dephaser and he thinks the head has been starved of oil, he also said it really could be a can of worms if I spend 400-500 doing the dephaser and cambelt kit and then it is actually another problem?
my mechanic thinks I should sell it stating the problem, but I love my clio and apart from this its mint and it really does sound bad so I don't think ill get much for it?

can anyone help????????????????
im really struggling to find answers!

  A special one.
If the belt is off then its not alot more work to take the cam cover off.

That way he can look and see.

What experience of the Renault does your mechanic have? Not knocking his knowledge but if it were me I'd look to get it to Mick, S&MWM, BTM or 519 for a second opinion

the belts aren't off he said he doesn't want to replace the belts unless he is sure because once he goes that far the bill starts going up?

Does any one know a good specialist mechanic that knows these cars(clio182) back to front and lives in or near Bristol???

Hi, Yes I can have a look. I highly doubt he has been able to check the dephaser for play without removing the belt.

Give me a call 07969 124504, and I can have a glance over it and give you a decent diagnosis.

it was the dephaser and dan is the man, he knew as soon as he heard it then he fixed it for a lot cheaper than Renault wanted!
