does silver polish up good?

You can get a good shine on Silver I have on half of mine (needs to finish pc'ing ) You notice it more on darker cars Have a look for Gav_B thread his silver focus looked the dogs

Shines up really well if you know what ur at! Def Clay it first! 90% of poor finishing is down to poor prep! If it's clean b4 you start then it'll come up well! I cleaned mine a few weeks ago, clayed, 3000 Grit sanded, compounded, polished, sealed and waxed! Spent 2 days on it and could believe the difference!
Can get a good finish off of silver, but you won't see a great difference between budget polishes and waxes and the expensive stuff. Depending hwta you use, and the paint on the car, you can get either a really glossy, reflective wet look silver or a flatter, flake-popping finish. Both are nice. 
As said, the bonus is that swirls and scratches don't show up too badly.

As is always the case the finish you can acheive all comes down to the prep work , the more time spent on prep work ie washing,claying, polishing/correction the better the end result imo.
As for a good LSP for silver jeff's acyllic kit is really very good gives amazing flake pop and the durability is extremely good.

I find mine looks quite a bit different after a good polish/wax.

I notice a difference when i clean mine. It's never going to look like a darker colour would if you cleaned that though. Sorry about pic quality it on my phone but i get a nice deep shine on mine

You can tell the difference! It all depends how gud u r at using it! If you don't know what ur doing, then cheaper waxes/polishes will work just as well! If you know what ur at, u won't see the swirls cos there aren't any, not just because it's silver!
Sorry, yeah, a good polish is worth its weight in gold. Removing swirls and light scratches from any colour paint is always going to improve the appearance.
However, a wax will do nothing to fix / hide swirls and I consider a budget wax/sealant, say AG EGP, will deliver similar results on silver to more expensive options. There may be a slightly improved finish, but not enough to justify the cost.

The wax will only protect the finish from rain etc. I find the more expensive waxes last alot longer, I only polish/wax my car every 3 or so months. I finish off with Zymol Destiny Glaze as it lasts at least 3-4 months! Most cheaper waxes are gone in no time! Have recently tried the dodo juice on the gf's car, so will see how that goes!

I had it left over after I sold the Blue Clio, only had a little bit left in the pot, so just using it up! Leaves a nice depth of shine, that I didn't think I could get on a silver car! But wouldn't be spending £500 on it jus for Silver! Will get something cheaper next!
