double sided dvd's

  Tesla MP3 2021
they are called dual layer. you will need a dual layer writer.
when in nero it will say that you have 8.5GB to use.

oh and ebay is a cheap place, but you can pick them up from anywhere nowadays

What you mean is double layer not double sided.

Anywhere that sells blank DVDs should sell blank double-layer DVDs. They have a big DL on them. And they say they have 8.5 GB capacity rather than the 4.7 GB of a single layer DVD. And they cost more.

Nero just treats them like a bigger capacity DVD. As long as its not an old version of the software.

The thing you need is a DVD writer that can write double-layer DVDs. Can the one in your PC do that? If it can't do it it can't do it, and all you can do is go buy one that can, which means pretty much anything new, and fit it. Its the DVD drive that detects that the media you have inserted in it is double-layer and passes on the information on the media's capacity to the operating system driver and to the writer software. So you just need to have a drive that can do double layer and everything should be handled automatically.

Oh, you really do mean double-sided.

Yes, they exist.

But they're rare. No-one really bothered with them once the alternative of double-layer became popular. DL doesn't require you taking the disk out and turning it over. DS does. Nero's just going to see a DS DVD as two single-sided DVDs.

And now BlueRay and HD-DVD have come along and offered even more capacity. So DS isn't going to take off now.

DS is old skool, when dvd movies first came out into the shops there used to be a lot of double sided discs, don't ever see them anymore although u can still buy them, they are just expensive.

really, I have been buying dvd since they first came out and I can never remember having to turn a disc over in the middle of the movie? I'm sure there might have been 1 or 2 but of my 600 i haven't got one i don't think.

A few movies had the movie on one side and the extras on the other but they were VERY rare.

DVD9 is the most common disc, single sided, dual layer and it was even cheaper to have 2 dvd's in the box, 1xDVD9 for the movie and a DVD4.5 for the extras.

I remember buying a tin boxed T2 Ultimate edition form the US and it was a special edition and very rare as it was usign a DVD18 disc with both sides being dual layer.

Even dual layer discs haven't taken off, even though the drives do it the discs are still pretty rare in comparison to the single layer and they cost too much because of this, its cheaper to use 2 x single layer discs than a single dual layer.

You can pick up 50 DVD's for under a tenner whereas you will get a hell of a lot less dual layer for the same amount.

The only reason you would really want a dvd9 is to copy a movie in completeness and most people shrink them to the 4.34 GB's as if you take the extras out the movies loses very little quality.

Thinking about it I think my Titanic is on 2 discs with the movie split over the two, can't really see why though.

Like dave says . DL dvd's haven't really taken off . Just compress any film over 4.7gb with no loss of quality . Use clonedvd , rips , shrinks and burns .

They are called flippers and Verbatim still manufacture them, they were available as singles and in 50x Cakebox when I used to sell them.

You will need to ask for 9.4GB DVD media.

You could trying ringing first4media on 01372 825 000.

Dual Layer refers to +r media and Double Layer refers to -r media.

bullitt is a single DVD5 (single layer, single sided), the size of the movie and extras is a measly 3.7GB (I have it, the silver one)

They have released another version which is a 2 disc set with the extras on a second disc.

I've got quite a few double sided original DVD's, some with the films split and some with the Widescreen version of the film one side and Fullscreen version the other side.

Don't know why you'd want them these days though :D

its moving back towards them, a lot of HD-DVD's now have the SD version on one side and the HD version on the other.

I've got 2 double sided dvds.

Both have 4:3 on one side and 16:9 on the other.

Trainspotting and Goodfellas.

Unfortunately not, on both counts!

I bought it when the DVD section in HMV consisted of about a choice of 20 DVD's! I remember lending it my cousin who thought it had a really strange ending, it wasn't until I explained to him that you have to flip it over to finish watching the film that he realised what was going on.

They actually did this on a few DVD's at the beginning, and they offered a swap out where you could send back the original dual sider for version which didn't require you to flip it over.

Unfortunately, you did get Armageddon back again. I couldn't be arsed to return it, so I've still got it.

i know of no-one that uses them and if they have taken off so much why aren't they more advertised or made by more people.

the drives have taken off but the media is still too expensive to have taken off IMO

I have a dual layer 'lightscribe' burner and the amount of DL media available is pretty small, lightscribe or not. And it isn't cheap.

For the people who do use Dl media, where do you buy them from?
