Driveshaft or gearbox

Right I no this has prob been talked about on here befor but looked about with no joy

i own a 2002 172 cup whilst I'm driving I've got like a whining/humming noise coming from the gear box area
as soon as I dip the clutch the whining/humming stops it doesn't crunch going into any gears at all??

last night as the missis was reversing it down the drive there was a clicking noise coming from the front left wheel
which I presume would be the shaft can any one shed me some light on this

could it just be the drive shaft or the gearbox aswell

the car has been fitted with a paddle clutch from the owner before me and the car as coverd 82,000ish mile

whats your opinions please as I really need to get it sorted sharp ish

I get that clicking on my cup when pulling left or right out of a junction... Drive shafts I've been told. I'm gonna fully clean my CV's up and see if its better. Apparently a damaged dif also creates a tapping/ticking noise?

Whining noise could be a release bearing..

Yep definitely sounds like a release bearing.

I've just bought a second hand shaft gonna give that a try first then if not looks like the box
is it a big job the diff or the bearing I no the box has to come out dont it

The box doesn't have to come out to do release bearing but its an arse.
