Driving SORN car for an MOT?

  An orange one
Need to get the V6 out and back on the road while the weather is great!

Its currently SORN and the MOT has ran out, is there a limit to how far the test centre can be from home?

Local garage could do it 2 miles away, or Renault is 15 miles away, and also once it passes, can i drive it home again or do I have to go straight to post office to tax it?

You are allowed to drive it to and from a prebooked MOT and there is NO limit on distance. Book it into a MOT station in cornwall if you like mate, perfectly legal.

I checked it with the DLVA in response to a question sent into a magazine that I was writing the question and answers page, there is no limit to the type of roads you use either, ie you can go on the motorway too etc, only rule is it has to be a direct journey, you arent allowed to go stopping off places on the way etc (I dont mean no fuel stops, I mean stops unrelated to core journey)

No limit but the car has to be booked in before hand so if you get stopped the police can ring the center

It has to be insured. Oh and if it fails you're technically not allowed to drive it home. If it passes I suggest you go directly to the nearest post office and tax it lol

That isnt true just for a fail as far as I am aware, its only if it fails and is prohibited that you arent allowed to drive it home again, to and from an MOT, are both legitimate journeys for an untaxed car.

Cheers guys, I'll ring renault i think, then they can do their 100 point check thing too, only done 525 miles since the last MOT 16 months ago so there shouldnt be any issues

if it fails you can drive it home also can drive it to and from a garage for repairs if its pre booked.

Hopefully i'll be doing this with my 172 in a few weeks time

Can you actually insure a car without an MOT ? Or is it okay without if you're going straight to a prebooked MOT ?

Yes but you can't tax a car without MOT or Insurance.

You will be fine this sort of thing happened in my previous car got pulled over mins after leaving mot station by traffic police as flagged up no tax n mot on car but showed him it had just passed it mot less than 5mins before he pulled me and all I got was told too tax it ASAP you can go too and from without either long as its going in for mot then taxed soon after as you can't tax without mot obviously

Check with DVLA/Gov.uk sites - you can't drive it home if it fails. You can only drive to a pre-arranged garage for repairs

Kinda sucks if you want to do the work yourself

525 miles?! Sorry but you need to give that poor car to me so it gets used ;)

Lol! I know I would love to do more, but it doesn't see rain, puddles or even damp patches on the road, it's not actually been washed using water for almost 18 months! So it's literally a bone dry car PMSL

My garage let me drive mine home last year when it failed it's MOT.

Garage will... but as soon as you receive a failure you're on the road illegally as you have been notified the car isn't road legal

The only place you can drive it legally is a garage

It's just one of those things - you'd have to be REALLY unlucky to get pulled over on your way home, but if its 300 miles away then I wouldn't risk it lol

I always thought it was fine provided it was going to the place of repair. It was a set of brake pads that had wore at odd rates, hence I was doing them.

Legally a garage can't stop you from driving off in your car! Nor can't they refuse to give you your keys (unless you've paid for your MOT). But it is illegal to drive if it fails :)

What's the law if you have an MOT from the previous year that hasn't expired, then get a new MOT done which fails for something like a blowing exhaust. Is it then illegal to drive even though you have a valid MOT and a failed MOT?

You can only get a £70 fine for no MOT they can't give any point's but the police will report you for no road tax which is a big fine and can take the car away

No different to if you didnt go for the second MOT, the first one is still valid, but you arent allowed to drive a car around with a blowing exhaust either way.

Why you need an MOT certificate

It is generally an offence to use on a public road, a vehicle of testable age that doesn’t have a current test certificate, except when:

  • taking it to a test station for an MOT test booked in advance
  • bringing it away from a test station after it has failed the MOT test, to a place of repair
  • taking it to a place, by previous arrangement, where problems that caused the vehicle to fail its MOT test, can be repaired
  • bringing it away from a place where the problems with the vehicle have been repaired
Even in the above circumstances you may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle if it doesn’t comply with various regulations affecting its construction and use. Your car insurance may also be invalid.

The police can ask to see an MOT certificate for a vehicle that needs to have one. They also have access to the computerised records of MOT test results and can tell if the MOT certificate for your vehicle has expired.

It is your responsibility as the vehicle owner to ensure that the due MOT test is carried out in time. You can use the peel off reminder sticker on the front of the certificate and put it in a place where you’ll be reminded of the expiry date. A place like the sun visor or the back of the tax disc holder facing inside the vehicle.

The penalty for driving a vehicle on the road with an expired MOT certificate is a fixed penalty notice from the police, currently £60, or a court fine up to a maximum of a £1,000.

I guess it would be a case of if a judge would view your driveway at home as a place of repair or not if your car's mot has expired and then you take it for another one and it fails.

Don't be daft

How would they even be able to police that

You could be driving to a mates in Devon and tell the police he was fitting your new brake pads for you lol

Only to an MOT station or to a registered garage and only when the car is booked in before you drive with no unecessary stops on the way.. strictly. But I bet 99% of people don't know that

It's like most people don't know what a dual carriageway is

It's something like £45 for mot test isn't it?

Its a £60 non endorsable ticket for no mot.

It's hardly a massive deterrent!

It very simple some peps on here try and push things

If your car fails do not drive it away. Get it fixed there and then. Simple

??

dont know in what way?

LOL they don't know that it's only a dual carriageway if the two carriages are seperated by a barrier or grass section
2 lanes going in each direction seperated by just white lines isn't a dual carriageway and is still a 60mph zone.
1 lane going in each direction seperated by a barrier or grass section is also a dualcarriageway

People think the dual refers to 2 lanes - but it refers to 2 seperated roads

Thank you search function.

I was just about to ask this question. Sunflower has been SORN'd for a year and hoping to get an MOT in the next few weeks.

I asked a policeman years ago about driving without t n t to get my car t n t'd and he said as long as its been pre-booked in at a test station and i was on my journey there and not 50 miles in the opposite direction it was fine.
But this year i had been driving for a month with no mot. :S I really thought it ran out in April. How would i of stood then?
I booked it in asap and can say its all done yesterday and has a fresh bill of health.
Gonna get it marked on calendar and might even do the txt reminder too.
