Driving with lights on

apparently i read somewhere they are tryin 2 pass laws so we have running lights on everycar just like the volvos! it helps 2 have them on as people are more likely 2 b able 2 gage how far away you are wen they want to pull out from a junction! this is backed up by strong evidence that darker cars are involved in more accidents! this is what ive heard!

This is a ploy by the government to make us pay more tax.

Lights on = more required energy + uses more fuel = more fuel duty for them

Think about it...

This has been discussed by road safety groups for ages, so far always been rejected, in a large part due to the fact Bikers will stand out less.

As of 2003 bikes are required by law to have headlights linked to ignition and therfore make it impossible to ride without headlights on.

MCN is the best source for updates on propsals for this.

So please only use lights when required.

As for picking "glaring" differences (excuse the pun) between cars and bikes... it's pretty easy to distinguish between 1 light and 2... ;)

Not being funny or anything, but MCN is going to have just a teensy bit of bias towards bikers isn't it?

What about those with one headlight out?

I nearly crashed into a car with one headlight once. Thought it was a bike and gave myself more room than I actually had.

Technically they shouldn't be on the road though. You're also referring to night-time, whereas this thread is for the most part about using lights in the daytime :)

I put mine on if the motorway is having one of those days where everyone stays in the fast lane to go 1mph faster than those in the middle lane (obviously the slow lane isn't there to be used)

usually makes people move quicker :p

Not when filtering and looking behind in the mirror. If you have hundreds of lights behind when you glance a single bike headlight wont stand out. People should look properly but they dont hence this being the law.

MCN will have the intrest of bikers in mind yes but how do you propose there stance can change what proposals are being sought or an actual legal fact :s

Just in case you didn't get that post, it was being pretty sarcy in a jokey way...

Anyhoo... Anyone can give any spin or angle to any fact or law you like (as publishers will no doubt do). And besides, it's not clear cut subject like land law or anything.

once had a tube on a bike nearly take me out as he was overtaking a lorry in a bend, all I could see was a car behind the lorry with what I thought was full beams on (it was pitch dark and the glare led me to think that's what it was...)

turned out it was an idiot passing the lorry on my side of the road, missed me by inches bet he shat it.

Mine go on when the car starts and off when I'm opening the door.

The thing I really love is people pointing and flashing during the day.... Yeah, I know I've got my lights on!!
