DVI socket in the back of My TV

  197
Hey people. I have a 42inch flat screen plasma which isnt HD. The sky man came today to replace my sky box, and he noticed that i have a DVI socket in the back of my TV. Now apparently i can get a socket to plug to plug into this socket, which then turns it into a HDMI socket. Now would this mean my TV becomes HD ready? which inturn would mean i could watch HDTV tv and films (i have a PS3) and HDTV through a sky HD box?

HD would just scale down to SD, if it's not a HD TV.

You can't increase the number of pixels your TV has just by plugging in HD sources.

Yea, they use all them same pins except for audio so you wouldn't be able to send audio over.

Pick them up for couple quid too off ebay

EDIT: It'll only go up to a WXGA resolution which is 1440x900 if your lucky, could possibly be 1024x768 and stretched. Check your manual or online

Ok, so if i hooked up my ps3 or Sky HD via an hdmi cable, to the DVI socket via the adapter, i would just get the picture, but no sound, if this is the case, how would i get sound?. Also, would the picture be any better quality? Im guessing no 1080.

i get 1080i no problem by doing exactly that and use optical cables from the ps3/sky hd box to a surround sound amp

i have no idea what you just said. lol. What im worried about, is buying the adapter, and nothing being different. I just need someone to tell me what to do.

What TV do you have and I'll find out what resolution you can get through DVI. Same with sound aswell, should be an audio in that you maybe able to assign to it or if your running a different amp just use a TOS-LINK Optical cable into it!

My TV is a bit crap to be honest, its made by Tiny (who made the computers). Now looking at the back of the TV, there is an audio in, on the back of the TV, with the red, white and yellow sockets. All i wanna do is play my PS3 games and Blueray DVDs with a higher defenition. Does this mean i need one cable going from the PS3 to the DVI socket, then one coming from the PS3 to the sound inputs?

Mate i think this TV came out before Britan had heard of HD lol. To be honest its a good TV for the money we payed for it. Down stairs, there is now a 52inch 1080dp LG, mint lol

Ok, so i understand that i can connect my PS3 through a lead running from the HDMI port on the ps3, to the DVI port via a connector. But DVI doesnt support sound, how do i get sound?

Use the other cable that has the Red, White and Yellow on and just use the Red and White into the correct PC input. It may only be a mini jack though (like a headphone socket) if it is you will need another adaptor lol!

Let me know and I can get you one!
