emission warning light, burning smell?

  RS Clio 182
i know this has been covered but the mrs has just been out in the car and come back and the emission warning light has come on and wont go off, just took the car for a good 'thrash' and it is driving fine, the exhaust is blowing from the backbox ever so slightly and there is a burning smell ehn i get out the car, im going to get it plugged into a diagnostic as soon as i can get ther but is it ok to carry on driving and do you know what the smell could be, cheers in advance

what kind of burning smell? Horrible rotten eggs type is cat overheating, the warning light would be on but probably wudnt be running right if that was happening as would have to be overfuelling.
