Emmisons of the scal

I have just rang the garage I am picking my clio up from in 2 hours and they advised it failed the MOT due to really high emmisions reading. Any ideas what this could be apart from cat or lamda? not sure if theres a common fault or possible engine problems that could be causing it

Usually Lamba sensor.

Mine failed last year on emissions and the guy passed it anyway on the dodge.

But I got it on the diagnostics a few weeks later and it was running perfectly fine. So I can only assume it was the shitty vortex cat the previous owner put on.
