Engine Failure

  Clio 172
Hello folks,

I recently purchased a 2002 Clio 172. It had done 54000 miles when I bought it and thought this to be normal for the year. Now, as luck would have it, just out of warranty and the engine has blown.

I was driving down the road and white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. The engine gave in and would not start again. I took it to a mechanic who gave me the great news of the engine being no good. I have purchased a reconditioned engine with 14000 miles on for £550 and the mechanic will install it for £300. I understand that it could have been my head gasket that would have gone and seems like its taken the engine with it.

The car is chipped. I did not chip it but was told by the guy that he thought it was chipped. I have a customer key and it says the company name, Superchips LTD, on the top of the key.

I guess I should get to my question lol. Now that I am having a new engine put in, should I get rid of the chip? Could the fact that it is chipped have lead to the engine blowing or would you think its just down to bad luck?

i would think its highly unlikely that the superchip caused the engine failiure, they do superchips where i work and they are very reliable and have been tested for a longer before put on the shelf. where abouts are you?

Superchip don't fit a 'chip' - basically just re-map fuel settings in ECU

The car will only improve with a re-map since it essentially optimises the running

I'd say neglect, neglect, neglect - lack of oil and filter changes, thrashing from cold etc

P.S: 54K means nowt without old MOT's (3 in your case) AND stamped & receipted book

almost any numpty can make up a service receipt in Word and rewind the speedo

Sorry :-(

  Whichever has fuel
Speak to Renault first.

Ask if they can find out if the car has a history of problems (warranty work carried out etc)

Ask if they will contribute towards the total cost of a brand new replacement unit(you'll have to get it done at a dealers though)

Somethings not right there what exactly wrong with the engine as matt said head gasgets are good on the cars.
