Engine/Gearbox combination

I plan on doing a MK1 172 conversion and was wondering what gearbox to use? I already have a valver gearbox and a mk1 diesel gearbox.

What's the general consensus on this?

i'd go for the valver gearbox and see how long it lasts :)

Thanks geesus69, I've just read your project thread (all 16 pages) and was so impressed it inspired me to do mine, hence the question about.

My valver is off the road atm, the gearbox mount snapped the other day, lol.

Oh right, didn't know that! when you say "cup box" do you mean cup box and cup box only?

you can drill a hole into casing of non-cup box in order to fit mechanical speedo drive, have done it once, (cracked casing replacement) best off finding one with mechanical drive though as a right faff drilling hole at exact angle

172 cup boxes are the only new mk2 phase 2 boxes with speedo output holes

Mk2 phase 1 172 also have speedo outputs sorry i should have mentined them as well.

Also Mk2 phase 1 none rs cars have speeod output sensors (or least should have theres a few specials)
