Engine Speed sensor,TDC ??

  260% JCW
Ive got a speed sensor fault code but the speedo works fine its just the Rev counter that's doing what it wants.

Does the TDC provide rev counter info???

Thanks Guys

I had this on a 172 the other week - Rev counter was intermittently going wild and would then stop and start at any time.

Turned out to be wiring connector going to the speedo sensor in the gearbox. Changed the connector and the speedo sensor - problem sorted.

Just to update, just been and taken the TDC out and clean it. It was a bit dirty, also cleaned the contacts and sprayed loads of WD to get rid of any moisture ingress. Also did the Thermostat as that needle drops on its own sometimes.

No Change

Matt is the speed sensor the one with the heat shield arround it next to the manifold or further across?

Also did you notcie on yours when the revs dropped did it cut out your rear demister. Just wondering if the re-demister switches it self off when you shut the engine off via the rev counter??

The speedo sensor is fitted to the gearbox. Your car may not have one if the speedo reading is that which is fed of the ABS system ( rear ABS sensor detects the revolutions of the hub which sends a signal to ECU and then to the inst panel ) so your back to square one.

Im pretty sure on some models the Rev counter is fed by the ECU so you may have a wiring fault / ECU fault. It may also be fed of the coil pack / alternator so check these connections also.

Rev counter reading comes from TDC (Flywheel) Sensor...Its fed into the ECU for the running of the car then the ECU outputs the same signal for the tach.

Quick bump for this because I might be having a similar issue. Car was struggling to start so I popped in a TDC from another Renault, looks the same bar being a bit thicker.

The car starts up fine but the rev counter does nothing until higher in the revs and then it flys up, unsure if it goes up to the correct reading though.

Would the different TDC sensor be the problem do you reckon?
