Entering code on standard stereo

How do I do it?

Its a standard head unit from a Mk1 Clio. I turn the unit on and it just says "Code", then four lines appear. I try entering the code with the numbers and nothing happens!

the first 4 preset buttons are to enter the code digits.preset 6 is to enter the code once you have it on the screen using the first 4 presets.press and hold preset 6 and after a few seconds the stereo will beep and accept the code if its right.

Ive just tried it again, but this time theres no "Code" on the screen when I power on, just the four lines - does this mean Ive been locked out or something for trying too many times incorrectly?

I expect its just waiting for you to enter the code. i just put my standard stereo back in tonight. Try entering the code, if its 4267 for example then press No. 1 four times then no. 2 two times. ect ect as jay said.

I keep getting the four bars displayed and nothing happens when I try entering the numbers in the way helpfully described above. Seems to have frozen up. Never mind. Will try again in the morning

4 lines means its frozen up.you will have to leave it switched on until code reappears.could take up to an hour though depending on how many attempts you have had at entering the code.

if not mate, and all else fails its 25 quid at renault to get it reset. i was sat entering the code on my old one for ages and it just kept locking. Like Jay says, the more you get it wrong, the longer you have to wait before you can try again. Turns out the previous owner had changed the code!
