"A sensor in the steering wheel detects the path selected by the driver. Other sensors in the vehicle measure the actual path. The system compares the path selected by the driver and the actual path and corrects this as necessary by applying the brakes selectively and/or acting on the engine power"

Cheers James....so does that mean it brakes individual wheels for you then or just basically applies all the brakes?

It doesn't actually apply the brakes for you but rather adjusts the level of braking force applied to each wheel based on trajectory vs wheel speed signal when you're hard on the stop pedal.

It's more of an extension program to ABS in reality but a pretty bloody good one as far as they go.

Cheers chaps, thanks for the quick replies.

I've done a couple of track days in the clio with and without the ESP on and just wondered what it was doing in the back ground whilst going round.

It does actually apply the brakes itself! Well it certainly does in my 182, if I provoke the car into lift off oversteer on a wet roundabout the ESP will apply a front brake in the direction the car is sliding and very effectively bring the car back in line without me going near the brake pedal, is the system different on a 172?

No, you are right... I didn't realise the 182 ran Bosch ESP 8.x which does indeed apply the brakes to alter trajectory
