Evo Car of the year 2009

  Clio 1970000000
Not sure if this point has been discussed elsewhere but read the entire article yesterday.

They concluded that the Clio might have scored even higher if it DID NOT have the cup pack!!!!

  200
Yes...brought a tear to my eye....well not really but was great to see them in there.

As you get older and wiser i think you start to see through the corporate gloss of evo mag to the underlying fact that it is a big advertising brochure for car manufacturers. The amount of intimated and disguised back handers and bribery that goes on is staggering.

I mean, when you think about it, and i mean really think about it, you would have to be pretty shallow to buy a car based on someone elses opinion of it.

I wonder how highly the renault range would score if the evo mag writers had to buy one with their own money, communicate with dealers about the many faults and witness it make 20 bhp on the rollers because it wasnt a tuned up press car.

Evo mag is good photography and escapism. That's about it. It amuses me that a large number of people think their opinion is worth anything more than some guy down the pub.

I am older and wiser and as much as I love 449 and Gold they've had there day just has your hackneyed random spouting of crap.

If you really that bored go and join something like orange men who love gym's anonymous and stop trying to score points on here.

Brad, you do realise that metcalfe bought and still owns, a trophy? Seeing ad you're about, have you let us know your raving qualifications in the heel and toe thread yet?

I like red cars. Someone at evo likes silver cars. To say that silver cars are better because they have 100 years of journalisms at evo towers is a lame argument.

Owning a car is subjective. You cannot say one car is better than another. The problem arises when people see the opinion of some journalists and then refer to those opinions as facts.

I also remind you that all journalists are normal people who simply write down their opinion in print. A guy down the pub is simply a normal person who gives you their opinion over a pint. In other words there is no difference in the thought processes that lead to the opinion, only a difference in the way you hear about the opinion.

I agree with KingHarding TBH.

Why people take what Evo/AutoCar or anyone else says as gospel is way beyond me. Try things for yourself.

Yes, they are good for entertainment and to give you an insight but if you're really interested in the new car from whatever manufacturer, you wouldn't instantly dismiss it because some journo says it's s**te. Well not if you had a brain for yourself anyway.

No offence mate, but your williams was a nail. Good for moving furniture about, but not really a drivers car.

But surely they know more about cars than you, a example being how to drive them to their full potential and what makes them good in their respective class.

Ie. Astra vs focus ect... They drive a lot more cars to compare them than your average Joe bloggs.

Okay, lets take your example.

No idea what their verdict was on either of them. If they slate the Focus and say the Astra is by far the better car in every respect. If I had both of those on my shortlist, would I dismiss one because Evo said so? Would I b****cks.

I'd drive both and make my own mind up.

Gone a little off topic but i agree with both sides on this.

On one side you have the fact that this is there job and they are good at it so they are the best people to listen too.

On the other side you have to try things out for yourself.

The funny thing is everyone likes top gear here (including me) and they are BY FAR the biggest culprits.

so true...They also now have chris harris at evo now so im sorry the geeks with there amassed knowledge of nothing over at cliosport towers are going to have to take a backseat.

A nail really........................

I've had 2 mate and my Williams 1 was rated as one of the best on Williams Clio and featured in Autocar.

Feel free to eat your words and with regard to driving I hardly think someone with so little skill/passion/balls and who to my knowledge has not been on a trackday or ventured to the Ring - let alone even done something simple like a road trip to the Evo Triangle is entitled to comment.

If you wanna bring it mate I am the older and wiser one.

It's all about how qualified people are to pass of opinion as fact IMO. The mags tend to make clear that it's opinion, there's no objective scale for enjoyment, steering feel etc. Much like heel and toe discussions. Qualifications brad??????????

Having read the evo articles on the Clio 182/182 Cup I can say that their opinions are actually facts. Everything they wrote about is spot on in my eyes. Also having spoken to Harris/Bodvingdon/Meaden in person over a few days you understand that they are real car enthusiasts who really know what they are talking about. If they say the steering is numb on a BMW believe it, they've got experience to make that call. Look at the Clio 197, they said it was imperfect...then the 200 appears addressing most of the issues...good call evo!

It's pretty obvious that they have picked cars that they have tested through out the year and that have come out top of group tests. That is why the GT3 made the cut and the R8 V10 didn't. That is why the Clio 200 is there and the Mini Cooper S isn't. They've then added a sprinkling of cars that are simply epic or have been key players in 2009. This is the reason it covers all budgets...the other reason is that a Clio 200 on a winding Scottish road can be as much fun as a £100k super car. Have a look at my Applecross thread, there is no way Justin is going to have the experience in the Gallardo up there!

By all means make your own mind up...but don't dismiss the opinions of those who write for evo as paid for by manufacturers...that would be silly!

Back handers and bribery; a very bold claim. I guess you have inside knowledge of this to back it up?

I mean, when you think about it, and i mean really think about it, you would have to be pretty shallow to buy a car based on someone elses opinion of it.

I can't image anyone would by a car based on a magazine review alone, but Evos Fast Fleet section provides valuable information on the long term running costs associated with a wide range of motors, which currently includes a Clio 200, which helps to make an informed buying decision. Harry Metcalfe's report on Trophy running costs for instance, including a detailed report on the maintenance of the dampers was priceless. It certainly helps yo buy in confidence, if anything else.

I wonder how highly the renault range would score if the evo mag writers had to buy one with their own money, communicate with dealers about the many faults and witness it make 20 bhp on the rollers because it wasnt a tuned up press car.

Dito what's been said before. HM owns a Trophy.

Ever heard of giving your readers what they want? It helps when selling magazines you know. Luxuary cars are excapism for most people, and yes, Evo is pure motoring pr0n in its presentation, but that's what its readerbase want and expect to see. Subscribers even get the magazine without all the headlines on the front cover as a collectors item.

I would rather trust Evos opinion on a luxury motor than a Mondeo-driving Joe public from the slug-and-lettuce.

Still, each to their own.

I used to be a subscriber a couple of years back, haven't read it for ages. I had a quick browse through this months, looks ok. What ever happened to Bovingdon? I used to enjoy his writing in particular

Went off to set up Drivers Republic which failed. He's yet to return or crop up anywhere else as far as I am aware? Harris who was involved in the same venture now appears to be a regular at evo.

+1 I like to read reviews to get an idea for what the car is about otherwise i dont care what anybody says. Its my car and no-one elses. Most car debates on here always end up with 'evo said this, evo said that'.

Its just there collective opinion, some cars they i hate i love and vice versa.

Is that why i caught and passed one of the writers on a wet track at Bedford?

Sure, maybe me wasnt trying. Sure, maybe he was using one arm. However, I think some people on here think the sun shines out of their back passages, and they know everything to do with cars and can drive them better than anyone else.

Him in a golf GTI, me in a williams. I wont embarrass him by naming names.

Sorry, when we rated this car at the owners club we gave it a 4 out of 10. Scored badly on body work, interior and originality.

Why? I'm sure Catchpole etc don't live on cs? I went past a new focus rs at Bedford, does that me an expert?

I choose to disagree and as I do know YOU I know that this is about as likely to have happened as it is for me to spray my Trophy 449 and the wheels gold.

So if we're telling stories did you here the one about the mint famous multi resprayed Williams?

Sorry if that ones not funny I have others.

Believe me when I say I am older and wiser and will win.

Aren't the Williams pretty handy on track? Surely a Williams should be quicker?
