External Graphics Card

I have a half decent Acer laptop that is all singing all dancing but has a rubbish graphics card, as I'm sure it won't be upgrade able on the inside can you get external ones?

I've never seen an external gpu, but thats cos I aint been looking lol.

You can upgrade the internals of your laptop. Just google a graphics card with "M" next to it.

So you looking for performance or just an upgrade for cheap?

I don't know of any laptops that have upgradeable GPUs.

Also never heard of external GPUs. It would require far too much bandwidth to run over any external interface.

Hi mate, I wouldn't bother going down the route of an external GPU. The external solutions can be hard to get hold of and don't offer the same level of performance as their 'internal' equivalents (due to having to transmit/receive data over a less than ideal interface). The external setups I've seen, whilst quicker than integrated GPU's, have been mediocre at best.

In lay-man's terms - having an external graphics card to power Rome II well, would be massively compromised by the interface (the bit between your external graphics card and the laptop itself). Imagine having have a great set of slick tyres (your laptop) that connects to a 7-litre V8 (the external graphics card). Then imagine the connection interface between the two being a garden cane. Each end of the equation is more than capable in itself - it's just the bit in the middle which lets it all down.
