F1 Qualifiers

harder than it looks, especially in the cheap "General" area through a fence!!!

Not bad at all. Shame the fence is in a few of them, also the shutter speed is a little too fast on the first few. But lovely and sharp. Very jealous you have had a chance to shoot these guys, even from spectator side.

That was my problem, I was on 100 iso, with a fence in front and it was far to bright and ended up on 2000th of second.
Nothing more I could do, other than find a suitable gap to shoot through, but in the end we decided to enjoy the day rather than spend it pissing in the wind.

Awesome day though.

I know how you feel at Silverstone. Could you not get into the stands overlooking the track and use a longer lens? Or do you have to stay where you are?

A brilliant effort though. What body did you use? At 100ISO, you werent using a D3 ;)

The angle in 4, 5, 6 and 7 is superb, proper 'press pass' feel to them with the nice low perspective.

There are some quality angles still just about accessible with the new configuration, although I assume getting at them is pretty tough for F1 on any day but Friday. The Vale Straight is good for panning fun and there are a few spots where they have to leave emergency access that you can get direct, low shots (usually going away from you though).

As you've mentioned though, far more fun to watch than try to shoot. It's far more enjoyable shooting the FIA GTs etc where the crowds are relatively sparse.

Your exif suggests you were on ISO 800 ;)

I think if i had been there i would just have watched, I might actually have to go one of these years....

I think you need to edit the brightness and contrast to liven them up a bit. I did mine using Microsoft Office Picture Manager, I don't have the patience to do much editing, it only took a couple mins each to adjust till I was happy.

With regards to the fence, it depends on how close you are to the fence and how much focal length you're using. These were taken in the middle of Vale, standing a couple metres from the fence with 300mm zoom and you can barely see the fence. When I zoomed out, the fence became more noticeable.

300mm and cropped:

By the same measure i would say yours need the Contrast/saturation turning down. Nice sharp images though. I would look to start your own thread with them however ;)

I haven't played with saturation yet. I tried not to make them over-colourful but thought they looked a little bland and dull before touching them.

I only posted in here to show the fence issues lol

my exif does show 800 on the 3/4 angled shots, this is due to it being impossible to pan a car coming towards you at that angle - and were my first group of shots, so just grabbing what I could.

Dan I stuck my D3 on Lo iso ( 100) for the panning stuff.

Part of my problem was that this was my first trip to a racing circuit, and after a complete walk round the track in "flip flops" I found some great spots.

As it was qualifying, you risk not getting a good spot for the sake of taking photos etc....and the crowds literally swamp the fences once the cars go live.

I was also blown away with how quick an F1 car actually is, so half the time my camera was down and my tongue hanging out.

VISH- I get what your saying about the fence, and am fairly competent at "making fences disappear" , but I was standing 20ft from a fence because we arrived slightly too late- and people had deck chairs etc set up.

I might go deeper on the edit tonight, see if i can bring more life to them.

Would definately like to get more practice at this type of stuff, and with Brands on my doorstep I have no excuse.

i'll be honest, i have loved everything you have ever posted so far, these though, there is just something missing, i'm not sure what it is, but theres something missing.

I guess you shoot a lot of people and shooting a 200mph rocket through a fence is a slightly different ball game (well lol, thinking about it you might have actually shot a rocket/missile??) if you've not really got any experience in it. we all know you have got it in you from your other pics, but for me, these aren't doing it for me.

I know what you mean about shooting or watching though, sometimes i take the camera and spend the whole time looking through the lens trying to get that perfect shot, then feel you missed the action just to get a photo, so sometimes i purposely don't take my camera to enjoy it with my own eyes for a change. that was the case with goodwood, spent two years taking photos then the third year went without a camera and people couldn't believe i didn't take one and were relying on me taking them so they didn't.

Here are a couple of others.
dk - you hit the nail on the head about them not doing it for you!...they don't do it for me either really, think what I will have to do is get out more and practice.
I won't let it beat me, we have a go kart track down the road at Lydd and as I am off for a couple of weeks I might get my fat arse down and get some practice in.
It is good to be put back in your box every now and then.........I'll get my coat.

i prefer the second lot, think they have more colour, could do with seeing bigger ones too, they are quite small.

where are you focusing, on the nose, the helmet or the wheels, seems to be a few different points?

must admit, i've not really taken many head on shots before, its mostly been panning shots.

i used to do a lot of motorsport photography, loved the panning shots to see how slow you could get the shutter before you lost the focus, superbikes were one of my favourites. I was lucky enough to spend qualifying in the ferrari garage a few years back and got some amazing shots of the cars going down the pits and had a 500mm monster lens my boss lent me which was perfect for silverstone but so bloody heavy carrying around for the day!

as i've said before though, your military shots are always amazing, take my breath away!

tried to focus on the apex of that bend, but the speed of the little critters kept catching me out lol
I was using a 600mm - and my DoF must of only been 2 to 3 ft at that distance.

Have I read that right - £15 for the Saturday? and what sort of access does that give?

I can't do Sunday unfortunately.

That will get you to about 75% of the circuit (no grandstands). All the outside of the indy circuit, and the inside of the GP circuit. There are some really nice angles available to spectators on the GP loop, i don't think you would be disappointed.

Have a browse through some Talk photography threads, lots of spectator togs on there.

on a mission
Cheers Nick

If any other Phots from here are going that use Nikon - feel free to use my lenses (600mm+30mm)

There are some nice shots here and I prefer the mkII edit. I agree with what DK has said, the standard you set with your shots is incredible - the story telling, atmosphere, composition, technical brilliance etc... these don't quite match up with what we have come to expect BUT that is no criticism on the shots above. It will certainly be fun to try shooting some more cars and no doubt you'll be reeling off some really great shots in no time at all.

Apologies mate, was meaning to offend or insult. I hadn't been in the photography section for a while so had forgotten some of the amazing work you had done previously :)
