F1 drivers in the early years really must have had colossal b****cks. Charging about in those basic, stupidly powerful very unsafe cars in hindsight is even more mental than it must have seemed at the time.

Golden years. Back when everything was mechanical and the onboard computer was the drivers' brain.

Almost appears like childs-play (though granted, it clearly isn't) - in current F1 where clutch settings can be determined by an engineer on the pitlane wall, in comparison.

That Depailler video is crackers, serious opposite lock and lack of traction.

Will have to watch the 3 from '78 later.


proper drivers. not like the wannabes of today imho. put a chimp in front of a keyboard, eventually theyl write shakespear, put a modern f1 driver in a proper old skool f1 car n theyl crash at the first instance of driver experience. too much electrickery in todays cars. that goes for road cars as well. imho.
 
Bit unfair on current drivers tbh. It's just a very different discipline now. Back then you had less mechanical and aero grip and a manual box to deal with. Now you have Kers, drs, brake balance, engine mixture and a plethora of other settings to fiddle about with while still travelling at 100+ mph centimetres or mm away from barriers all while having someone jabbering in your ear on the team radio. Modern F1 cars have been demonstrated to be a nightmare when tyres and brakes aren't at optimal temps too by the likes of Hammond (or someone who can actually drive) Chris Harris.

I'd still wager current world champion F1 drivers would be very quick in an old school machine.
 
Those '78 videos are great.

That Suzuka one confused the hell out of me for a while too, before I realised it was mirrored.

Comparing them to today's drivers is impossible though. Its a completely different discipline. The challenges of modern F1 are in different areas. Modern F1 cars can corner so much quicker than old school cars, and they require a completely different kind of skill. Just because the cars don't slide around like they used to people (wrongly) assume that driving a modern F1 car is easy.

If you gave a driver in 1978 a car that could corner like the 2011 Red Bull they would **** themselves at the thought of the speed they could carry through the bends.

Modern racing is also far closer than the older stuff. We no longer see people on pole by 2 seconds and races won by laps. Its a different sport in a different era. Just as impressive, but in a different way.

And most importantly, safer.

if its worth anything to mclaren, the actual pricetag of the car wouldnt matter 1 bit. its the car, not the pricetag that matters. as long as its as it was then theres no biggy. but lets just take a look at that statement of yours. mk1 escort, in a barn, no floor, no inner wings doesnt run etc etc etc. £500 er. now. a completely restored car mint, bit more than the £500 er i think dont you??

The clear point made by this clip was just how thrilled LH was to drive that car. I'd even argue that he would have had just as much fun if it hadn't been piloted by Senna!

By his own admission (around the 3.20 mark) - he says that it's nothing like the current car he drives and the level of commitment needed is difficult to imagine. The unanswered question is of course, which car would he prefer to regularly drive? ;)
